How A 17 Year Old Started A Tie Dye Empire. (Working Title)

My tie dye story starts a few years ago. Around 2013 when I was 13 or 14 my siblings and I decided to go to Hobby Lobby and pick up a tie dye kit on a whim. We were intrigued by tie dye and were ready to try it out for ourselves!

After watching the instructional video and rummaging through all the contents of the "Do-It-Yourself" package, we got to it and I immediately fell in love with the concept of the one-of-a-kind item you'd get 24 hours later. After that day we tie dyed regularly, maybe once or twice a week for a few month straight. My sisters and I never got tired of it!
Once we'd each amassed 7 or 8 tie dye shirts, our mom kinda put the kibosh on our adventure saying that we should slow down because there was really no reason to be making so many shirts just for ourselves. She had a very good point! So our production slowed down quite a bit. We tie dyed here and there with our friends and family.

I'd always loved tie dye, but kinda forgot about it.

So fast forward to the summer of 2017 and I was on my way back home from a family road trip from Michigan to Arizona.
Somewhere in Oklahoma it hit me like a rock..."A Tie Dye Etsy Shop"
I immediately blurted out to the car; " What do you think about a tie dye Etsy shop?"
My mom was kinda taken aback by the abrupt business proposal.
But she said, "It's an idea for sure! Not a bad one at all!"

That's where a 17 year old Jake came up with the idea to turn his passion into a business.
The rest of the road home was spent brainstorming, daydreaming, and planning.
"What would the name be?"
"What designs would I make?"
"How on earth do you start an Etsy shop?"

All questions were answered in time.
The rest of the year was spent quietly testing, planning, dreaming, discussing, and getting a plan in place.

Jake's Tie Dye was officially launched on January 28th, 2018!
I. Was. Terrified.
I was scared that nobody would like my work, that I'd make no sales, that I'd have to get a "real job" and my dream job would be a failure.

All of those things have yet to happen.

I'm very grateful for my family and my friends who've supported my small business thus far!!
Also a huge shoutout to CrankyGirlTieDye for chatting with me about business stuff and geeking out with me about tie dye that nobody else gets ;)

So here I am, 21, and running my small business I started at 18 and loving every minute of it!
I'm ecstatic for the future of Jake'sTieDye!

Frequently asked questions
Returns & Exchanges

I do not accept returns or exchanges because each and every item is made to order. BUT if you have a problem with your Jake's Tie Dye, please, please reach out to me and let me know what the issue is. I don't want anyone to be dissatisfied with their purchase.

Care instructions

Machine wash your Jake's Tie Dye shirt with similar colored clothing on cold. Then dry as usual. That's what I do with my personal collection and I've never had an issue!

Wrong Address?

Message me as soon as you notice and I'd be happy to get it changed for you.

Does the white part of your Dalmatian or Orca look a little dingy?

Give it a wash or two! Since the white part of your shirt does't have any dye on it, it can absorb some of the black and look kinda drab. With a few washes it should come clean and be the sharp black and white shirt you're wanting!

Are your items just barely too small?

Wear them around for a day and break them in! Since my items are either 100% or 80% cotton they tend to tighten up after being washed and dried. Once you break them in they'll relax and give you some breathing room. This may happen for the first few washes/dries. Give 'em time!

Not sure what size is right for you?

First check the size guide provided within each listing. If you're still unsure, size up! This goes for all of my items: When in doubt, size up!
All of my items, except my sweatpants, are true to size. My sweatpants run small so just size up on those! Otherwise, they're true to size.

Will my tie dye hold up?

Yes!!
Your tie dye creation will NOT:
1. Shrink
2. Fade
3. Bleed
4. Warp

Or any other shenanigans. Remember to wash your Jake's Tie Dye on cold with similar colors or darks. It's really that easy!

Are my items unisex?

Yes!
The only items that are not unisex are the ladies tank tops and the ladies v-necks. It's unisex unless stated in the title!
