Artist's Statement

Janet McKinstry Designs

I see my bags as wearable sculpture art. Each one is uniquely inspired by the materials I have on hand. I begin with a piece of fabric that inspires me and then I build from there. The process is really close to playing like a child where we once got lost in a world of creativity. My process is constantly evolving. The lines and textures in fabric are like paints on a canvas to me. I blend the lines, colors, and textures as I would in painting. The trick is to take risks and listen to the materials! I love seeking out unique findings for closures and finishing touches; vintage buttons, carved cabochons, old world coins, and my own works in clay and painting.

My Bachelor’s degree is in fashion and marketing from The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. My Master’s degree is in Divinity from Andover Newton Theological Seminary with an emphasis on theology and the arts. These two streams; business and spirituality, blend together to make my artistic expressions truly unique. I serve a small rural church in Tyringham, MA, part-time, and fulfill my other time by creating and selling my bags, quilts, aprons, hats….(basically anything I feel inspired to make in the moment.) Often my days unfold by designing a bag, meditating on sacred text, writing a sermon, visiting someone in the hospital, and then beginning a quilt! It‘s a beautiful life.
