About

A Little Art Shop in Alaska

I have loved drawing, painting, and creating since I was a little girl. In elementary school, I would draw pictures and sell them to my classmates for 50 cents. My high school and college notes were always covered with doodles, and I experimented with new mediums in my free time: watercolor, oils, pastels. And I filled my Chicago dorm room with memories of home: the mountains and creatures of Alaska. Later, as a fist grade teacher, I decorated my classroom with illustrations of friendly critters, especially Toby, the beloved class guinea pig. I was often "commissioned" to make posters and bulletin boards with my creations for my fellow teachers. And I continued painting in my free time, decorating my home with my own creations.

The inspiration for Jasper and Ruby came in 2010, when I was expecting my little Ruby. I spent weeks planning every detail of her nursery, picking the perfect fabrics and colors. With watercolors, I painted a few simple, cheerful woodland creatures, and a few happy sheltie dogs (inspired by our goofy Jasper, and shelties I had loved in the past). The idea for this shop, and the vision of sharing my art with others grew out of those first four nursery paintings. My shop expanded through frequent requests from customers for paintings of their beloved canine friends, so it grew to be more than just a nursery art shop, to include many of the most loved dog breeds for all ages to enjoy.

These days, as a stay-at-home mama to three busy little ones, the bursts of inspiration are often hastily scribbled on a napkin or back of a grocery receipt, and usually the only hours I find for painting are after the last lovie has been found and last goodnight kiss has been given. But they inspire me daily with new ideas for my paintings with their wonder and their mischief. It has been a great joy to create this whimsical world of Jasper and Ruby, and to know that my art is being loved all around the world.
