"My art is both interior and landscape, still life and action, abstract and yet real.
I make art as an act of discovery, an act of meditation, an act of revolution, an act of love.
I want you to have and enjoy living with these visual reminders of the immediacy and slipperiness of what is."
Welcome! I am Jaya Julienne Ashmore.
Even as a child, I made art from a deep inner connection to life, and from a love of people and the living world.
This reverence for life only deepened when I began an enduring love affair with meditation in my late teens.
After studying religion and art at Harvard in the 80s, I received a Radcliffe grant to learn about women's folk art cooperatives in India. I was fascinated by the directness of visual ritual, handmade symbol and local sacredness woven into every corner and season of daily life.
In my own art, with the simplest means possible, I invoke the non-separateness of what is "here and now" and what is "beyond" --like much traditional artwork, often done by women, and conventionally dismissed as "primitive" or "decorative."
My work is embodied AND ethereal, like human beings.
My work is immediate and evocative, spontaneous and demanding, like life itself.
A recent buyer wrote: "I bought Jaya's painting because of the vibrating bright colors... packed with energy.
When I got the painting (excellent customer service), ...it began to tell me a story.
Looking at it again and again, the depth continues to reveal itself."
Although I sometimes enjoy drawing people, places or things, I more often dive into "big mind" and let life move me in more mysterious ways.
Even in figurative drawings and paintings, I bend conventional perspective towards the more sacred planes and space achieved by Indian miniatures and many religious and folk traditions.
When you buy from my shop, my works travel down dirt road to a long curvy highway, and, after dropping the kids off at school, to the post office in the nearest town. May the artworks carry with them the fresh air and aliveness of all my inner and outer journeys.

5 out of 5 starsI love this mug! Not only do I enjoy having one of Jaya Ashmore’s original pieces of art in my hands, I love having the companionship of these four friendly angels. It quickly became my favorite mug for both my morning and evening tea. The mug is high quality and the shipping was fast. I highly recommend anything from this shop!

5 out of 5 starsThis is the second painting I got from jaya on Etsy. With the first one I went through a proses of observing it and peeling of the layers of meaning. At first I saw images and stories in the abstract painting and then I saw in it emotions until finely on one time that I meditated on it I caught a glimpse of it as it is. No image no burning sense only vibrating colors without name. The painting began to open up to me as I sat in front of it and it looked like rings of beautiful light energy are extracting from its brim towards me. The new painting I got is of a series called invisible sunrise and I fell in love with it the moment I opened the envelope. There is so much more to it then what can be captured on camera. This brings joy

Alive and calm.
Life is art! From tremendous stillness and calm, energy emerges. Brightness, space and joy.
Almost 30 years after graduating with high honors in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard, I am happy that in the last few years I can offer my recent mixed media paintings beyond my immediate circles.
Why?
Color on paper transmits light and space with a specific atmosphere.
Line on paper creates focus, movement, direction.
The unmarked page also speaks of mystery and depth.
My paintings have a raw yet ethereal quality that can remind us to live this precious life fully while we have the chance.
I want to bring home the energy that arises from the essential paradoxes of life:
spontaneity and discipline, stroke and space, stillness and movement, completion and continuity. I love how my paintings can bring that atmosphere of aliveness into someone's hands or room. I think it is important to live with objects, like my paintings, that can hold a space of our potential as human beings, to remind us from day to day of what life is about.
Together life and art move us. I love the spontaneity of allowing life to move the line, to direct the color onto paper, and to express at once the silence and the unpredictable vibrancy of our lives as human beings.
As a child, painting and drawing were part of my natural meditation, discipline and play.
As a student, my artwork transformed me and helped me meet the world more fully. Training brought freedom.
As a young adult and meditator, color and line fed my inner eyes and gave me good company in my outer travels.
Now, as an experienced meditation teacher and mother, I allow color and line to emerge from my deep love of life.
I enjoy discovering how, as Henri Matisse challenged his students to do, the simplest techniques can move us most.
I love to let simple color and line be the energy of presence, courage, honesty, and peace in this real world as it is.
