JeanEltonPottery's Shop Policies
Stoneware is the product of a truly organic process. We buy clay from a major deposit in Massachusetts, form it into one of our many shapes - whether dinnerware, home decor pieces or accessories - and fire each piece twice. The first firing transforms the clay into a new material: a hardened ceramic, which is sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of glazing. We apply glaze by hand using spray guns, dipping or painting and then fire the piece again, this time to about 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of all the handwork and because the firings are purely organic processes, there will be some irregularities in each piece. These are not flaws, but symbols of the piece's hand-built and organic origin. Most people regard these irregularities as part of the charm, character and appeal of fine, hand-built stoneware.
At a recent trip to a "big box" store, we looked at the underside of a dinner plate to read the following: "Warning: not to be used with food". We bet that most purchasers of so-called tableware at such stores expect to use it with food! By contrast, our glazes are all safe for food and use in the dishwasher and microwave. You can feel good about eating off our dinnerware and using it every day. We do at our home!
