HISTORIC JEWELER'S IN THE HEART OF PARIS
Located in the heart of Paris's most historic area, at one of the most iconic bridges of the city, Jeanne Danjou et Rousselet is a treasure trove of rare delights, an essential stop for those in search of unique vintage items of jewellery, and costume jewellery with old-fashioned charm and elegance.
Between 1920 and the middle of the 1970s, Louis Rousselet was one of Paris' most important jewellers, designing and making jewelry for the illustrious worlds of Fashion and Music Hall. Born in Paris' Ménilmontant district, he was already an apprentice enameller at the age of 8 and went on to have his own workshops by 1920. At the height of his career, he had 800 people working exclusively for him.
In the 1930s, Misstinguett – the great acting and singing star of the time – was the muse of Rousselet and his company. Many starlets such as Joséphine Baker often appeared in public wearing Rousselet beads in venues such as the Moulin Rouge and the casino de Paris.
Chanel, Dior, Jeanne Lanvin, Jacques Fath, Maggy Rouf, Pierre Balmain, Elsa Schiaparelli, Balenciaga... all the Parisian fashion houses came to Rousselet for exclusive jewelry in the showroom situated at 2, rue de la Paix. There they could get their supply of pretty glass beads and chic embellishments for their creations.
At the end of the 1960s, Louis Rousselet passed on the management of the workshops (with 80 employees) to his daughter, Denise. He also bought the store at the Pont-Neuf, where the jewelry could be presented to the public in a perfect setting. Today, Denise's son Jean-Claude is in change of the boutique.
For more than 50 years, the Jeanne Danjou store has been a place that many Parisians know and love. Many big names in fashion and Film & TV come to the boutique to buy vintage necklaces, like Ines de la Frassange who mentions us in her book La Parisienne (see Press). Vintage fashion fans and bloggers can find antique jewelry and unique creations at an affordable price, which also serve as wonderful souvenirs of Paris for tourists from far and wide.
Antique collectors are often delighted to find some uncommon pieces in our shop, and with a view to reselling you could buy a collection of items wholesale (up to 50 items) : drop and stud earrings, necklaces, chokers, chains, pendants, bracelets and brooches...
Adjustments and reparation of jewelry is also carried out with expertise in our workshop and directly in the boutique itself. All our creations are made using beads and antique jewelry features: beads embedded in brass or copper, filigree pieces, imitation pearls in enamel, pearly or colourful glass beads, polished gemstones and crystals, galalith, bakelite, chains and parts made of silver and gold...
Thanks to our history being intimately linked with clothing design and fashion, it's impossible to ignore the Parisian chic and elegance of our jewelry, which is 100% Made in France. The expertise of the artisans who make these pieces guarantees the quality and uniqueness of our jewelry.
VINTAGE
Our vintage pieces of jewelry are, for the most part, original pieces from Rousselet. They are rare and often unique items, created by hand between 1920 and 1980 in the company's Parisian workshops.
COSTUME JEWELRY
Our vintage-style costume jewelry is made using antique parts, that mostly come from our limited stock of Rousselet beads, as well as our filigree pieces, calottes, clasps, brass chains, and gold and silver coated brass pieces. Only certain elements have been made more recently, as well as the putting together of the final pieces. As our jewelry traders have regularly asked for in the past, it is possible to make up small series of jewelry items (up to fifty pieces depending on what we have in stock). For more information, get in touch by phone or email.
UNIQUE PIECES
We create unique items using vintage and rare pieces, found in the heritage of Louis Rousselet's historic workshops. At the discretion of our discoveries, and in reassembling certain pieces of jewelry, we create these items (on order if you require.)
ROUSSELET BEADS: TRADITIONAL PARISIAN JEWELRY WORK
For more than 50 years, the Rousselet workshops have been making imitation enamel and lustrous artificial pearls, which have built the company's reputation. The handiwork of the Parisian jewelry makers guarantee the perfect confection, always unique and delicately made, going from large and eccentric designs to tiny pearls (sometimes less than a millimetre in size).
Like in Venise, glass was worked on directly on the fire on a brass rod that, as soon as the form of the bead was made, was dissolved in acid, clearing the holes. Many fashion houses used to come and get supplies, used for embroidery on their clothing designs. Chains and jewelry elements were also produced made in the Rousselet factory outside Paris.
We still have a small stock of antique beads and coloured enamel pieces, pearls and polished crystals, galalithe beads as well as all sort of metal (silver and gold) elements. Also, filigree pieces, rings, fastenings, chainmail pieces, and more, which allow us to create some unique items and small collections, as well as reparation of antique jewelry.
You can also buy these antique Rousselet beads, pearls and findings at good prices.
