A balancing act

I have always been drawn to creative pursuits. As a child, I liked to draw, color, and express myself in whatever way was available to me, including performing arts. I studied ballet for ten years and tap dancing for eight years. After realizing that dance was not my calling, I turned my attention toward visual arts. Inspired by my Junior High art teacher who gave me just the right amount of encouragement, advice and constructive criticism, I decided I was a visual artist and never looked back. I reconnected with my former teacher as an adult. This reconnection led to a mentoring friendship that is invaluable to me and has contributed greatly to my growth as an artist and person.

I met and married my husband in 2004. He is a big fan and great supporter of my artistic pursuits. I am not a full-time artist though, so my painting time became a balancing act between my day job, and my new job as a wife. Then...two beautiful children came along. They are my joy and priority. So, now life is about what "hat" I am wearing at the time. Sometimes "artist" takes a back seat to "mommy" and "wife." But, in my heart, I am constantly wearing all three hats.

Jennifer Love Artwork came to life a few years ago when I decided leave a local artist co-op gallery that I had been a member of. While I loved the involvement with the gallery, I found that it continually took more and more of my “free” time, which meant more time away from my family, and less time for me to paint. I needed to find a way to spend time with my family as well as paint and pursue my artistic dreams. So, I set up a workspace at home, and opened my Etsy shop.

While I cannot pursue art full-time at the moment, my hope is to lay a solid foundation now with a good collector base so that I can make that leap at some time in the future. My shop is literally a "one-woman band." I am the owner, idea generator, creator, accountant, marketing department, and shipping clerk. Occasionally, my husband runs errands for me, and he is the chief "childcare coordinator" when it is time for mommy to paint.

My main studio workspace is a small area of our master bedroom where we have natural light with East and North facing windows. I have set up my easel and paints on my dresser top and try to take advantage of the natural light as much as possible. Eventually, I hope to move my children to a downstairs bedroom and take over their current room, which has North and West facing windows – the best light in the house. In the meantime, I make due with the space I have, and am grateful that we have a roof over our heads, food on the table, and I have art supplies and the ability to paint.

I contribute a percentage of my annual art sales to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in support of my sweet husband, who was diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson's Disease in December 2006 at the age of 44. Each day I am inspired by his sweet spirit and unending support of my pursuits and dreams, by his patience with our children, and by his quiet determination to enjoy life despite the daily challenges he may encounter.
