Announcement    Waldorf dolls are wool-stuffed cotton dolls with a simple appearance meant for open-ended free-play. In an attempt to keep Jessi Rose Dolls more affordable, I have kept them quite basic. Instead of embellishment, my focus is on quality, durability, and play value. And because little kids rarely seem to keep their dollies’ clothing on, the doll is also designed to look just as cute undressed as dressed. Every stitch is sewn with love.

These are my people. I belong.

When I told my mother I was starting a business making Waldorf dolls, she said, “I’ve always enjoyed watching you make dolls.” And that is it: always. I have always made dolls.

As a shy girl at school, I had a great sense of not belonging. But I loved my home. My mother always had (and has, thank you, Mom) a vast store of useful materials for making things from. I made a varied myriad of dolls.

Through my twenties, I wandered through Central and North America by foot, bus, and bicycle. I carried with me a small backpack holding a large camera and plenty of film, a journal or two, a fountain pen (I’m a romantic), and a change of clothes. And when I found myself stopped for a while, I picked up whatever materials were at hand and made dolls— embroidered dolls, rag dolls, and dolls of coir fallen from coconut trees.

Nearing my thirties, I decided to get a trade. I learned to climb trees, wield a chainsaw, rig ropes, and drop limbs and trees with decisive precision. I was an arborist. Delightful! Powerful. And through winters and foul weather, I worked on an epic illustration project filled with fine-lined human figures who danced from the vast stores of mythology in my mind out onto paper— paper dolls.

Approaching my forties, I met the man who is now my husband. We have two magical dolls with eyes that cry, arms that hug, and hearts that love. After wandering so far, I found myself back in northeast US where I grew up. I am a quiet person. I find comfort amidst my family. I am at ease when my fingers are busy making dolls— warm, cuddly Waldorf dolls. I put love into my work. This family, these dolls, these are my people. I have found where I belong.
