About

A Lifetime Of Sewing

My mother, Shirley started me sewing at a very young age. I first learned how to sew buttons on clothes. Coming from a family with three sisters and three brothers the need to replace buttons on our clothing was a necessity frequently. Usually on laundry day, I would sew on buttons; sprinkle the clothes to be ironed with a used pop bottle topped with an inserted sprinkling head, ironing was on the schedule for the next day.

My mother and grandmother lovingly made most of our clothing on a Singer treadle sewing machine, yes those handmade clothes became hand me downs as we out grew them. When I was about nine, I found a great interest in their creativity and asked mom to show me the techniques’ of reading a pattern, how to operate the sewing machine. I began making some of my own clothes and gifts for family, friends and my doll. All though I have tried many other crafts, sewing has been my favorite throughout my life.

When I became a mother, I added to my children’s wardrobe with my handmade clothing for each of our three children. I also redecorated their rooms with handmade curtains and bed linens including a canopy top and ruffled bedspread for my daughter, Jennifer’s room. When Jennifer was very young, she loved to play doll dress up with her dolls, so of course, I made her dolls a variety of doll clothes.

Coming from a large family I appreciated the gifts I received as a child, my most memorable and cherished gift was the Ideal© doll I received for Christmas when I was eight. I named her Jessica, Jessica remains with me today and she sits on my sewing counter watching me create doll clothes and accessories.

With my lifetime passion of sewing, I knew there was a purpose for my skills. I also found a fascination with women and young girls clothing and accessories of the past centuries and current the styles. With the limited and poor quality of doll clothes commercially offered, I set forth to create beautiful, high quality doll fashions for the numerous brands of 18 inch soft-bodied dolls.

Since the establishment of Jessica’s Doll Closet in 2009, I have made hundreds of outfits, ensembles and accessories from my over 2,000 pattern library. My belief is to offer doll clothes and accessories made only with high quality materials and the finest of workmanship to ensure the durability of playtime before clothes becomes treasured keepsakes.

My personal satisfaction for my creations is the visualization of a young girl imagination during her doll dress up, playtime creating precious lifetime memories of her childhood. My memories with my doll, Jessica will remain with me forever.
