Maritime Jewellery Designer follows her dream one piece of jewellery at a time!!
My name is Angie Stillwell and I am a Canadian based jewellery designer and small business owner from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada following my dreams and passion one piece of jewellery at a time ~ Jewelz by Angie was founded in 2009 and has been growing strong ever since.
Here is a newspaper article that was written and it is my story in a nutshell!!
"Her fling with bling is paying off"
Her personality sparkles as much as her jewelry does, and that’s why Angie Stillwell’s customers love her and the bling she creates.
Stillwell is the owner of Jewelz By Angie. She makes a wide range of jewelry such as bracelets, earrings, and necklaces.
You don’t have to talk to her for very long to figure out she is passionate about what she does for a living.
“I always dabbled in being creative, but I spent most of my life in customer service working in restaurants and the service industry,” said Stillwell. “It just kind of happened that I wanted a hobby. I picked up some beads and literally it just went from there. I made a few pieces and people at work really liked them. They were asking to buy them, and I said sure, and it spiralled from there.
“It just took off and now I do it full time.”
Stillwell started selling her wares online, which she still does, but since the Northside Market opened she has been a popular vendor there.
“Before I opened up at the market I would often do sales at a local hotel. I was lucky; the market actually approached me and asked if I was interested in setting up shop with them. I said ‘yes, as long as I could have my own room and I got my own little room”
The room is distinct; it’s painted hot pink.
Stillwell said she’s finding, even though she now has a retail location, her website sales have increased significantly.
“Even locally, it’s incredible. It’s amazing, and I can have a little more flexibility with the web sales. I often have‘flash sales’; I love doing things like that. Both the retail and web are doing really well, I can’t complain about either one. I’m actually in the process of upgrading my website because things are going so well online.”
Stillwell said she herself makes every piece she sells.
Some of the materials she uses include sterling silver, plated metals, gemstones, and a wide range of different beads and pendants.
“I buy my supplies both nationally and internationally. It’s an effort to stay unique because the jewelry market is very saturated. I have everything from glamorous bridal pieces to simple, everyday chic and everything in between. I do special orders, especially for brides.”
Stillwell’s website notes all of her jewelry is “designed with fierce passion, style and a dedication to uniqueness using only the highest quality materials.”
“That’s important. This really is a passion for me; I love what I do. If you’re a woman going shopping you get excited when you buy something new, I get that same feeling when I find a component or a bead for a new piece. When stuff arrives in the mail I can’t wait to rip into the package like it’s Christmas morning and start working with it.
“I really did take a leap of faith when I decided to do this full time; you can’t control the economy. People can like your stuff, but liking it and turning that into a transaction and an ongoing business are completely different things.
“Passion and drive has to be part of it because there’s lots of competition; you’re always going to be up against competition so you always have to stay fresh and I am driven by that. That’s what keeps me going, I don’t want to get stale, I don’t want to settle – I find the competition breeds innovation in me. I welcome it.”
Stillwell said she does her best to stay on trend, but puts her own spin on it.
“I’m aware of what’s happening and am always trying to stay up to date. I have some staple, conventional pieces but I like to mix it up. Some of the different pieces are the ones that sell the best.”
Stillwell has embraced social media to promote her jewelry – besides her website she’s on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.
“I keep it all up to date as well, it’s a lot of work but so worth it because I have the most amazing customers. I am blessed, they are faithful, loyal and get my name out there – they wear my jewelry with pride. Nothing makes me want to keep going more than that. I attribute everything I have to my customers.”
Stillwell said she adds new pieces each week.
