Announcement   Fall sale on Turquoise- prices slashed to about $1/ct !

JimzGemz starting this year, offers a wider selection of metals, including gold-filled, pure silver, solid sterling silver, argentium, and nickle. You can change out the metal (usually a jump ring, or a twirl bail), for the upgraded gold filled, pure silver, solid sterling silver or nickle. Just ask for a custom order, and I will redo the piece, and give you the new price. Typically it will cost a few dollars, and you might ask why did I not make them with the upgraded metal to start with. WELL, it is not because a few dollars per piece is an issue, but rather because I have made 11,000 pieces, and 11,000 times a few dollars is $10's of thousands of dollars. btw, while pure silver is beautiful, it is soft, and should not be used in all applications.

JimzGemz is trying to get more organized! We now make gemstones with crowns, and flats. Sometimes one side has a crown, and the other side is flat, other times, there are two crowns, or two flats. If the gemstone is described as reversible, that means that both sides are polished, and esthetically pleasing. Usually, one can tell by reflections whether a photo is of a flat, or a crown, but not always, SO I will endeavor to indicate the shape of both sides. Please be patient, there are lots of listings!

Transversely Drilled gemstones with multi-jump ring twirl bails! Transversely drilling a gemstone leaves the face free of obscuration. JimzGemz has been using silver and gold plated single-jump bails. These work fine, but there is a small chance they could open if tugged. Also, gold and silver plating are not forever, and eventually they will show corrosion. Our NEW INNOVATION is to use gold-filled multi-jump ring bails. The gold-filled wire will not corrode, and the multi-jump format allows for greater strength and security, as well as a little extra sparkle. If you see a gemstone that you want that has a single jump bail you can have it replaced in gold-filled multi-jump, just specify the number of twirls, and we will add them for $5 in silver and $10 in gold.

BIRTHSTONES
I have decided that the birthstone for each month will be the month's special. Pick one out, email me, and I will relist it a lower price. And here they are:
JANUARY
Garnet, the birthstone of January, occurs in a rainbow of colors. From the fiery orange of Mandarin Garnet (Spessartite) to the rich green of Tsavorite Garnet and to the most widely recognized color of red Pyrope Garnet, it is considered a great gift to symbolize friendship and trust.
.
Our featured gemstone has been Spessartite, but it has gotten expensive, so will stock, but you can order it.
FEBRUARY
Amethyst, the birthstone of February, is a variety of Quartz that carries a spectacular purple color that ranges from a blend of deep violet and red to a lighter lilac hue. Ancient Greeks believed that the stone protected the wearer from drunkenness and enabled them to keep a balanced mindset.
I am making some very thin pendants, so keep an eye out for them in 2017.
MARCH
Aquamarine, the birthstone of March, has a rich color and has long been a symbol of youth, health and hope. Its mesmerizing color ranges from pale to deep blue and are reminiscent of the sea. A perfect birthstone for March, the Aquamarine creates a beautiful accent to spring and summer wardrobes.
Aquamarine is one of my favorites, and I have many. If you are interested, contact me, and I will see if I have the right one for you.
APRIL
Diamonds, the birthstone of April, are commonly associated with love which make it the perfect gift for a loved one. While white diamonds are most common, fancy colored diamonds can be found in various colors including yellow, blue, pink and a variety of others as well.
Since diamonds are out of a reasonable price range, we offer fancy CZ and more.
MAY
Emerald, the birthstone of May, carries the rich green color of Spring and radiates a beautiful vivid tone. They are considered to be a symbol of rebirth and love. Emeralds are the rarest gemstones and are typically mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan and Zambia.
I have a number of emeralds, contact me for more information.
JUNE
June birthdays claim two birthstones; pearl and Alexandrite. Pearls have been wildly popular in jewelry for centuries because of their natural beauty. Alexandrite gemstones are extremely rare and desirable since they change color based on the lighting.
We have a fee fantastic corundum alexandrite with a wonderful color change.
JULY
Rubies, the birthstone of July, are considered the king of gems and represent love, health and wisdom. It was believed wearing a fine red Ruby bestowed good fortune on its owner. A Ruby is the most valuable gemstone and its value increases based on its color and quality.
I have some rubies, contact me.
AUGUST
Peridot, the birthstone of August, carries a lime green color and is one of only a few gemstones that exists in only one color. Peridot is believed to instill power and influence as well as bring the wearer magical powers and properties that protect against nightmares.
We are at present sold out of peridot.
SEPTEMBER
Sapphire, the birthstone of September, is most desired in its pure, rich blue color but is present in almost every color including pink, yellow and green. In the Middle Ages the gem was believed to protect those close to you from harm and also represented loyalty and trust.
I have some fabulous sapphires, including violet stars, and Padparadsha!
OCTOBER
October also has two birthstones; Tourmaline and Opal. Tourmaline is a favorite gemstone for many because it’s available in a rainbow of beautiful colors. Opal gemstones are truly unique because each individual gem is adorned with a one-of-a-kind color combination.
We have an excellent selection of inexpensive opals on Etsy.
NOVEMBER
November birthdays are associated with two gems; Citrine and Topaz. The warm color of Citrine is said to be a gift from the sun and it’s believed to be a healing gemstone. Topaz is most desired in its rich orange Imperial Topaz color but it is found in a variety of rich colors like blue, pink and yellow.
We typically keep a good selection of blue Topaz.
DECEMBER
December birthdays have claim to three gemstones; Zircon, Tanzanite and Turquoise. Each of these gemstones carries a unique blue tone making it a perfect birthstone for Minnesota’s frigid December winters. Zircon can be found in a variety of colors, but blue is the overwhelming favorite.

In order to provide better images we are taking two photos using different lighting.
One photo is CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lighting, ~4000K),
second photo is LED (Light Emitting Diode Lighting, ~2700K, similar to incandescent). This process is likely to take a few months, as several thousand photos need to be redone. In the meanwhile, if you want a photo taken with the new lighting, just ask.

Just bought a Canon T6i with macro lens, so hopefully soon you will see many better photos.

Final polishing is done after photos, in many cases, to reduce photographic glint.

Gemstone colors and personal color seasons:

A few words about JimzGemz (actually Jimz-Gemz, on Etsy you cannot use the hyphen).
About 90% of what you see started as a rock (rough), was sawed (slabbed), sawed again (trimmed), ground (up to 18 steps on diamond wheels), polished, drilled, milled, and wire wrapped by yours truly (Pierre Espirit, aka Jim of Jimz-Gemz). It takes about 30 steps to make a finished pendant. There are some pieces where I bought a cabochon (a gemstone with a crown), and repaired and finished it. Much of the Turquoise that I am now putting on Etsy is from a batch I bought from a warehouse that had been there for 25 years. I do not know how old it is, but it is Old Turquoise (called Vintage). Most turquoise is treated (has been for a very long time). The treatments vary, but since turquoise is soft, it is often stabilized (treated with some kind of glue or plastic, usually on the back, to make sure it wears well. Much of turquoise is also colorized. The colorization may be black shoe polish (has been used for hundreds of years), or dyes. I test the majority of my turquoise, and then, when I list it, I explain how it has been prepared, if detected. Historically, it has been said, that 80-85% of all turquoise has been treated. I suspect that much of the new turquoise is actually ground and compressed (and sometimes stabilized) tailings, as is my Kingman, and King's Manassa. Mohave "Turquoise" is a man-made material. The composition is not given, but it is supposedly turquoise, with various metals, and it is stabilized.

Most of my malachite is also pre-ground and polished material, that I trim, drill, and finish. Most of the other gemstones I sell went through the full 30 step process.

The earrings I sell are almost all make from faceted precious gemstones. Plastic or glass beads are not used. That makes them a bit more expensive, but there are many "beaders" that assemble earrings out of inexpensive parts, and I do not want to be part of that.

For the most part, the bails on my pendants are attached by drilling a hole, and either pinching the bail on, or pressing the bail in, and setting with a tiny drop of superglue. I call my bails twirl bails, and there are three types- Top drilled, face/front drilled, and side drilled. These bails are very sturdy. I also do what I call a circumfrential wire wrap, where the wire runs around the edge, which has been prepared to accept and capture the wire. I few of my gemstones have glue-on bails. I do this when there is a substantial probability that the stone might fracture if I drilled it. Gemstones with pinch bail can have the bails swapped with others that you see on my website, or from the Bail Upgrades listing. Not all combos will work, but you can ask, and I can try it (usually at no charge, though there is a charge for the upgrades). One of the reasons that you might want to swap the bail (besides simply your taste or desire to match the metal of your chain), is to make sure that the bail will fit over your chain. I can measure the bail opening, if you have a large chain, or your chain has a large clasp.

If you don't see a gemstone that is perfect for you, contact us at
DrJPHauck [!at] yahoo.com
with your request.

I hope this information is helpful, and I make every attempt to be as detailed in the descriptions so that you know what you are getting. No third world junk at JimzGemz!

How do you capture over 6000 minerals that combine in different kinds of ways and in different crystalline forms into 10 shop sections? Recently, I came up with 36, but how to do 10? Well, here is my best shot-
Agates, Chalcedony, Jasper, Quartz- all silicates, many very pretty, but usually not very expensive, some opals fit into this category, too.
Blue, Turquoise and Aqua Gemstones- why, because people like them! Many are copper minerals, but some (like larimar, apatite, and amazonite) are not.
Congomerates (because they are mixtures, or just don't fit any category neatly) has been changed to Fordite. Why? Because dried paint from a paint plant is our best selling item!
Earrings (occasionally bracelets, or necklaces- because they have a different function).
Larger Colorful Gemstones.
Major Precious (that would be Diamond- none here, Corundum-Ruby and Sapphire, Beryl- Emerald and Aquamarine, some opals, pearls etc.)
Smaller Colorful Gemstones
Tiffany stone (a trade name for opalized fluorite), a shop specialty.
Transparent &/or faceted (for the beauties that don't fit the major precious category, like Topaz, Tourmaline, Cubic Zirconia)
So, you can see that this is a very difficult task, so don't expect me to be perfect, but Please enjoy some semblance of order :-)

WHEN A SINGLE DIMENSION IS GIVEN, THAT IS THE GEMSTONE'S HEIGHT (not including the bail).

FOR A DESCRIPTION AND THE MEANINGS OF STONES, GO TO THE END OF THIS SECTION. For example, if you want to be creative- try Zoisite (Ruby Zoisite).

The things that affect the cost of a gemstone are:
1. Color- blues, aqua (Larimar, Aquamarine) are popular now, as is purple
2. Carats- Stone weight in grams or carats (5 carats per gram).
3 Clarity- or transparency
4. Cut/Craftsmanship- stone shape, finishing Wrap/bail
5. Cache-Vogue, what is in for this season, etc.
6. Rarity
7. Difficulty to fabricate
8 Effects- Chatoyancy (cat's eye, tiger's eye, hawk's eye, falcon's eye); Adularescence (moonstone effect), change of color (alexandrite), star or fiber effect,

5 "C's" - Color, Carats, Clarity, Cut/Craftmasship, Cache,
& Rarity, and Difficulty to Fabricate.
1. Color- more vivid, more costly
2. Carats- price is somewhat in proportion to weight/size. Precious gemstones the cost per carat is relatively constant, but may Decrease with larger gemstones. Major Precious, the cost per carat Increases with the size of the gemstone, sometimes significantly.
3. Clarity- our cabochons are usually not clear, but some have agate/quartz has transparent or translucent portions that add to their beauty. Some of our Major Precious Gemstones are transparent, and the more transparent, usually the more expensive.
4. Cut- for Cabochons, the harder the material the longer it takes to sculpt the stone, and the higher the gloss. For Major Precious Gemstones the number and size of facets can change the brilliance of the gemstones- the more brilliant, the more expensive...
5. Fashion, Style, Cache' what is in style at present.
6. Rarity- some of the gemstones we sell are becoming rare, which drives up the price of the raw materials, notably Shattuckite (a copper mineral), Tiffany stone (Opalized fluorite), and Sonoran Sunrise (a red and multicolor copper mineral). Rhodochrosite is also much harder to find at a a reasonable cost, as are Sugilite and Charoite, Also, Jade has gone up significantly recently. Larimar is going up really fast. These inflation rates can be seen a a difficulty or a benefit. Many gemstones are a really good investment- they go up in price faster than gold!
7. Difficulty to fabricate- some stones are easy to cut, and little material is lost in fabrication. Others are more challenging.
8. Effects can be very pleasing, and can add to the cost.

Overall, JimzGemz selects novel materials and designs not found in many shops..

If you don't see a gemstone that is perfect for you, contact us at

with your request.
