St. Louis Artist from North Dakota

I was made in 1981 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It's about an hour north of Fargo and an hour South of the Canadian Border. I'm Native American and European (mainly Norwegian but also French and German). I grew up loving hotdish and lefse while experiencing 40 below winters where you actually have to plug in your car (block heater) or your car may not start.

I'm an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in Belcourt, North Dakota. It's near the Canadian Border and close to the Peace Gardens. The Houles, my Dad's side of the family, are from there. My Grandpa and Grandma Houle spoke Cree but they didn't teach their kids; I'm told they liked to be able to talk in it and the kids not know what they were saying. Or maybe it could have been to help avoid discrimination when they moved from the reservation to Grand Forks, I never did ask my Grandparents why they didn't pass it on. I took French in high school and I could speak it to my Grandma Houle and she Cree to me and we would see if we could understand each other because they have similarities.

I decided to be an Artist in 1992. I was in 6th grade and we had drawing class on Fridays. My teacher, Mr. Metzger showed us things like perspective and how to draw a flag. I loved it and have never changed my mind. I got in trouble for doodling in class after that. I couldn't help it. One time I wouldn't pay attention after being asked repeatedly and my teacher pulled my chair out into the middle of the classroom. I slouched down and scowled at him the whole time. Today's me says sorry Mr. Metzger but Thank You for planting the art seed!

I knew I wanted to go to college, all my friends were going. My parents were not able to finance my college education so I wasn't sure I could go. However, I applied for and received Art Scholarships and Native American Tribal Scholarships/Tuition Waivers which I am grateful for. I also took out student loans to help make it happen.

I graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2004 with a B.F.A. specializing in painting and drawing. I relocated to the St. Louis area in 2006 where I found work as a Kitchen Designer while also doing my art. That year my son was also born. Today, my husband Andy and I own and operate a t-shirt print shop, since 2009, so that keeps me busy. I draw and paint on nights and weekends.

Welcome to my shop!
My Art is a creature of constant change. I go through phases of growth so you will find a variety of work here. I don't define myself by one style because I would be bored. I believe we all have potential to do more, to be better and I want to live my life seeing my own play out. There's always new things to come. :)

Additional policies and FAQs
Common questions:

1. Do you map out/trace your work onto paper/canvas before you start?
Nope, I don't. Usually happens 1 of 3 ways: I just sit down and start drawing not knowing what's going to come out, I have a vague idea in my head like "hey lets paint a buffalo" or I'm doing a portrait and referencing a photograph on my phone.

2. How long have you been an Artist?
Since 1992 when in 6th grade my teacher, Mr. Metzger, introduced different art techniques to my class. I loved it and thought it was something I could be good at. So I decided to be an Artist and I've never changed my mind. That was it.

3. What materials do you use?
For drawings: newsprint sketchpad paper, charcoals and pastels
For acrylic paintings: gallery wrapped canvas or birch board plus acrylics, acrylic markers and ink.
For watercolor paintings: watercolor paper, watercolors, ink or sharpies.

4. How long does it take you to create a piece of art?
It really depends on what it is. Some can be done same day (smaller ink/watercolor/drawings) while others can take many hours over many days. Sometimes things take longer too if I have to start over because I'm not loving it.
