Announcement    Welcome to JoansGarden, and thanks for visiting!

I began knitting as a small child in Adelaide but only began designing creatures in the last few years. Now that I've started I find it hard to stop. You can also find my creatures on Ravelry where I am also JoansGarden. I’ve tried a number of other crafts over the years but no others bring out the compulsion in me as knitting does, though gardening is also a passion when it is not frozen over outside.

I am always happy to knit up one of my patterns in your choice of colors as a custom order if you don't knit or just haven't got the time to do it.

Making the switch from scientist to knitting designer

I've always knitted - or at least for as long as I can remember. My mother taught me at a time when 'everyone' knitted. People knitted on the bus, in the doctor's office, at a football game, at lunch time. So it didn't take long to become proficient.

After moving to the U.S. in my 20's, I discovered that very few people were knitters and worse yet, there was very little available in the way of interesting yarn, so for many years I let the knitting slide. Then a friend returning from a year in Canada, reminded me about knitting and we began a Tuesday knitting night, which got us right back into the thick of it. By then knitting was becoming more popular and fabulous yarns becoming available.

After retiring from the lab, many years of joint problems caught up with me. For years I had been designing my own sweaters and while recovering from a hip replacement I thought I might try designing a toy. By this time I was a member of Ravelry with all the wonderful options that opened up - forums for testing patterns and the opportunity to publish patterns.

Then a few years later while recovering from a knee replacement, I decided to learn how to build a website. That resulted in KnittedCreatures, where I sell knitted items and take custom orders. Retirement is definitely not boring for me!

My whole working life was spent in labs - all related to biological sciences. My free time was spent outdoors hiking, canoeing, camping, skiing, gardening, and indoors knitting, reading, cooking. Now retired, I enjoy designing knitted creatures.
