Announcement    Are you the person who just loves art and line combined with function? Do you love fabric and color, texture and leather? Do you appreciate thoughtful design.....having pockets and spaces to keep your special possessions? If so.,.. welcome to Joey And Me Handbags!

I dream art. I wake up in the middle of the night or morning with completed 3-dimensional handbags of all kinds rotating as if on a lazy Susan. I draw up what I've seen, draft the pattern and make the bag. WHAT FUN!

Our bags should be an expression of ourselves.

You've seen the girl who flies out the door with her very favorite lip gloss and $20 bill tucked in the tiniest creative clutch.Maybe you ARE that girl. Everything she does seems to flow from her in a artsy, subtle style.

I am a big believer in the women I've known. Strength, insight, tenacity, summed up in the way that Ginger Rogers danced backward in the those fabulous heels for so many years.

"Woman"= An artistic outworking of beautiful form and function. This is the creative juice behind my handbag designs.

Aren't we all carrying something special inside? We all have gifts that are entirely female.

My bags are an attempt to express all this. Form, function and FUN. Even the most distinguished looking bag may have a little surprise inside...say...ZEBRA lining or some screaming pink inside the black and white damask bag.

I found that I just love FABRIC....especially COTTON --it grows out of the ground--how cool, and I also love TEXTURE and COLOR PLAY. You may notice that the fabric designs are artistically laid out on the handbags.

To me, the handbag designing process is sometimes born from what the design of the fabric is calling for and sometimes the opposite...when the body of the bag comes to mind and is then dressed with fabric. Either way I'm having the time of my life!!

Not trying to break the record for the number of bags I can make....just looking to make some stand out pieces that my customers 'get.'

I make each bag as if it is going to one of my very best friends. It is difficult to show you much of the sewing details. I have some self-taught Haute Couture skills and I apply them. All of the seams are very well finished and accurate.

Life just shouldn't be brown-leather-serious all of the time! I am hoping that my bags will brighten your days. .

Thanks so much for looking. Please let me know what you think whether you buy or not--will you? - Kerry

Don't Listen to the "EXPERTS!"

Because I didn't know that I could go to school for fashion design and did not see myself as an artist I chose Biology and went to a State school in NY. It wasn't a good fit so I started taking electives in Fabric Design and Dyeing and Weaving.

I designed a gorgeous (since it was the 70's I should say "Groovy"), slouchy batik, quilted crossbody book bag for a final project. Looking back (20/20 now, of course!) it was way ahead of its time. My Professor, Barbara K., insert memory of Nurse Ratchett's personality, reviewed it in front of me. Her expression darkened and she appeared to be fighting a strong urge to VOMIT! She shook her head and said, "NO NO no, Kerry. I can SEE that you have NO design skills WHAT-SO-EVER! You MIGHT be able to sew for a real Designer someday but, NO, you are NOT a designer." Thankfully, she did not vomit.

I was not even thinking of designing bags for a living at that time but if she had had some foresight and encouraged me---you never know... whatever...I filled my life with wonderful things.

Fast-forward nearly 3 decades. I needed to work but wanted to be able to schedule my own time. I started experimenting with handbags and started waking up in the morning or middle of the night with already finished handbags in my head as if on video. Well--that was FUN so I started working through the patterns that I envisioned.

Fear enters here. It's one thing to make a bag that I like but it is a fearful thing to make them up and offer them for sale. You think.."What if NO ONE likes them but me?! What if I invest in all the materials and labor and .......nothing! Well, thankfully, that didn't happen.

I am a stickler for quality and detail. I have a little boutique and I listen very carefully to my customers. Their input has helped me improve my bags and the features included in them. I owe a special thank you to my daughter, Alison, who has helped me so much along the way. Thanks also go to my husband who tolerates my sewing with wild abandon in our tiny home.
