JoeysCoat is a labor of love.

Have you ever had a special relationship with a dog that you could not define?

The inspiration for JoeysCoat came to me quite unexpectedly in the Fall of 2009 with the passing of my beloved Boston Terrier, Joey. One month prior Joey had been photographed wearing his vintage coat and at the time, I could not have known how important that photo of Joey would be in my ability to recover from the empty space he left behind. I sat down and wrote a “design charter.” I listed three goals for myself; to develop and manufacture vintage inspired coats, individually designed from repurposed materials; their purpose being to create a life-changing opportunity, to take a tragedy and follow it down a new path; and finally, to provide an avenue in which to draw upon the talents of family and friends that would afford them the opportunity to participate in the process. Despite the fact that this document ended up in a drawer for two years, I came across it one day and finally, I was ready. I began the process of creating JoeysCoat.

JoeysCoat has allowed me to channel my grief in a constructive manner that will keep him a part of my daily existence. And to my amazement, it has all come to fruition.

JoeysCoat is a responsible product. The fabrics are vintage, recycled, repurposed from clothing and blankets found in Thrift Stores and Estate Sales; no longer valued or needed, all with a history of their own. The buttons and buckles are recycled from a time gone by. Most of the binding, vintage as well; the colors and texture a reflection of the decade. The coats are masterfully designed and lovingly tailored on Vashon Island by Dana Lazare, fashioned after Joey’s vintage coat. Each is given artful consideration as fabric, trim, buckles and buttons are meticulously chosen; every one unique, no two alike.

From tragedy to joy, a remarkable memory is born; it is JoeysCoat – inspired coats handcrafted from vintage textiles and repurposed materials for the discerning canine and the humans who love them…

Gratefully yours,

Fur and Ethical Beliefs
During my treasure hunting I have come across bits of fur, sadly cast-off, no longer appreciated for its beauty. After much consideration, I have decided to incorporate fur in JoeysCoat designs when available, with the intent to honor the life of the magnificent dearly departed, and keep JoeysCoat wearers warm.

Care and Cleaning
Because each JoeysCoat is created with vintage, repurposed materials, it deserves special care. Please hand-wash your coat in cool water with mild soap and lay flat to dry or take your coat to your favorite professional Dry Cleaner.

How to measure using a cloth tape:

Neck – Circumference at the base of the neck (where the collar lays).
Length – Collar to coccyx (where the tail begins).
Width – At the hipline (flank).
Girth/Belt – Below the ribs to determine adequate belt length.

* The buttons are secured with back buttons and may be easily adjusted based upon your discerning canine’s needs.
* The belt loops provide a secure resting place for any extra belt length.
* Some belt lengths may differ slightly - recycled fabric pieces are utilized to their fullest, therefore it is important to measure!
* Belts may be shortened at the buckle end as needed - most dry cleaning establishments offer alterations for a minimal fee.
