It is an organic tangle of tops, shawls and hats; scarves, hoods and gloves, in addition to some pretty little jewelries. One of a kind pieces and small series; fabric, crochet and beaded - or the combination of all.

A girl of the snow covered pine tree woodlands flying all around the world on a magic carpet...

All of the patterns are Joik originals, and items are handmade of premium quality materials in my studio in Helsinki.

Hope you enjoy everything as much as I do :}

About

colour. fiber. love

Joik started as offshoot from an earlier Etsy shop founded in 2008 with a friend - now it's an outlet for my inspiration and wanderings in the fiberworld.
The side product of meditation really.

I was taught to crochet by my grannies, compulsive crocheters both of them, and I remember the first actual wearable thing I made as a child - a multicolour beanie so tightly knot it was more like a helmet than a hat.

I've come a long way since then, it's an ongoing learning process of material and pattern.
I just go ahead and try until I'm happy with the result - it might take awhile, and sometimes my WIPs sit in the closet for a long time, until one day I realise what it wants to become, and how.
I write my patterns down in a self-invented crochet gibberish with pictograms, still reclutant to learn the actual pattern writing. Don't want to lose my own artist voice I guess.

I am a visual merchandiser in event business, and besides decorating I sew - curtains, tableclothes and whatnot.
At the moment I'm quite inspired by the possibilities of combining crochet and sewn.
I like little details too, just a few pretty beads to finish my things off.

I'm fascinated by the diversity of human race, all the faces, traditions and cultures this planet hosts, it's an endless source of awe and inspiration for me.
Intricate patterns, bold colour combinationations, shiny bits and pieces, complicated embroidery in traditional costumes is what makes me go oooooh.
I find natural patterns intruiging as well, mesmerized of how lichen grows, trees branch and little coils of green spiral open into ferns.

As from the business point of view I have plenty of boring bulk sewing for the event business, so I try to keep Joik as it is - a fun exploring game.
If it doesn't feel like playing anymore, there's no point, because I'm convinced all the joy of making, little solitary smiles, happiness and freedom I feel while creating is present in my items - they're like talismans of good mood and peace of mind.

I learned how to crochet when I was very little, and off I went - never learning how to read the patterns or instructions. I'm still on the same road of trial and error, led by the curiosity of what will happen if I do like this or that. Love it.
