Building something out of nothing

I love making pottery because it is tangible in an increasingly digital world. Making pottery is literally making something out of nothing. You turn a formless lump of clay into something that is useful and beautiful when you throw a pot. For me, there is a feeling of accomplishment when I’ve completed a piece, and I can hold it and say “I made this.” For me, this is meaningful experience.

I learned the technique of throwing with two different types of clay while taking classes at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, and I took it and ran with it. Something clicked; I was hooked. I've been making faceted agateware for around five years now. Each piece is different. The clay mixes together to form unique patterns – no two are the same. I take two or three different types of clay (usually a light clay, a dark clay, and the reclaimed scraps of the two with colored stain added), put them together, throw them on the wheel, and then cut away the outer layer of the piece to expose the designs that form when the clays mix.

What’s revealed is a surprise to me as I remove the outer layer of the clay. I have basic ideas of how things will look when I’m making them, but I’m never quite sure how it will come out. I love how some of the process relies on serendipity. It allows me to give up a bit of control. Life is unpredictable; for me, so is the process of making art.

I recently relocated to the Pacific Northwest and now practice my craft at Radius Studio in Portland, OR.

Making things that are both beautiful and functional adds meaning to my life. I hope that using them will add meaning to yours as well.
