How our brand was born.

Where did the Apple or the Swoosh come from? Every brand has a story behind it. Our story is the history of a couple that met on a beautiful winter night in Madrid, Spain. I am an American who has lived half of his life in Spain. The day we met, I was on vacation, visiting family. I was mesmerized by Maribel; so much so, that I decided to stay for a month and in the process I lost my job. I figured that it is easier to find a job than to find your soulmate!
Let's go forward sixteen years! After marriage and two kids we have created a fashionable and socially conscious company. Having little kids and finding always princess and superheroes t-shirts made us move into creating different style baby bodysuits and toddlers tees. Before meeting Maribel I had an experience while traveling that directed me into manufacturing with a conscience. I visited a cigarette factory in Burma where girls spent most of the day crouching and rolling. They should have been in school! Maribel was also conscious of the materials used, so we decided to build our brand on organic cotton. It took us some time to find the right sources, but we can say now that most of our products are Fair trade and GOTS certified.
Going back to the apple and the swoosh, we chose two playful kids dressed in a dragon costume to represent our brand. They are the Jolly Dragons that every kid has in them. Jolly Dragons not only sounds great, it does have a meaning for us. We, got married in 2004 in Madrid, Spain. Back then we had no idea we were going to follow our dreams by creating Jolly Dragons. Maribel was a beautiful girl with a lot of talent. When she was thirteen she won a contest were the most talented kid drawing artists would go to Disney world in Florida. Her craftsmanship was superb, but like many other people she never pursued her inherited talents. Later on she studied to be a lawyer and a sociologist, although she somehow knew that was not fulfilling for her. While she was studying to be a lawyer, she met me. We seem to be different on the surface but soon we realized how much we had in common! I always liked martial arts movies and the dragon was a great symbol for me. When we first met I told Maribel how much I had enjoyed watching “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”, I was so excited about the movie that it never occurred to me that she might see me as childish! Actually she loves martial arts movies! That was a sign for me! She then introduced me to medieval age books. She had read “The Pillars of the Earth” recently and encouraged me to read it. I then bought the Tolkien trilogy, “The Lord of the Rings” with its Medieval Age flavor. She completely forgot about the surrounding world while reading the books. Martial arts and Medieval Age have the dragon in common. That is how the Dragon in Jolly Dragons came to be. So, why Jolly? We had to soften the dragon. We love dragons, but dragons are fierce! How could we have a dragon become a fun, playful and rebellious being? We needed an adjective that had to become part of the dragon we saw. That adjective had to represent someone in good spirits, lively, merry, cheerful, festive, joyous, happy, delightful, and charming, and that is exactly what jolly is. Jolly Dragons! We are now a small company supported by family, friends and mouth to mouth. Jolly Dragons has turned our dreams into reality, as a family, we all contribute to the success of the company by having a lot of fun with it. These have been the most challenging times for us as we moved to another country, worked, took care of the family and created a business. Challenging means that we have goals and dreams that we are working to achieve, it means in a sense living life to the fullest. We hope that more and more people get to know us and share our same idea, to have cool, fun and super comfy clothing!
