Announcement    Domestic shipping charges have been reduced for all of my knives to more accurately reflect current UPS and USPS rates. I'm trying my best to set shipping charges at an accurate rate fair to both you and me. The USPS has raised their rates for mailing packages to an unreasonable level, both first class and priority. If UPS is the only choice listed for any item it is because they're the best deal for the size and weight. Etsy is suggesting I hide the shipping charges in the total price for an item, but that will price me out of business. If I do happen to overcharge for postage, I am happy to refund that amount back to you. Please understand that current shipping charges are putting many small businesses on the brink of collapse. We need a new postmaster! Louis De Joy is a thief.

Eclectic Interests

Thirty-two years ago, I was purchasing firewood from a fellow who was a caretaker of orchards in the village of Corrales, New Mexico, not realizing the aesthetic value and material properties of apple and apricot wood. I asked one of my colleagues, who had a band saw to cut a couple logs of my fruitwood and I was surprised to see the extraordinary quality, smell and appearance of the wood. I wondered why I was burning such a valuable resource. At a later time, my brother gave up his woodworking tools and sent them to me. A drill-press, planer-joiner, a table saw. Since that's an incomplete repertoire of tools, I invested in a Woodworker's Supply, and then a Laguna 24 x 24 band saw, a bench top planer, combination belt and rotary sander and a router table. I began milling fruitwood from my supplier, discovering the magic of white and red pear, nectarine, black and Black Forest cherry, plum, plum burl, and later, avocado, almond, coffee, jujube, lychee, mango, coconut and other fruitwood. Through my website, www.thorn-creek.com, I discovered there's a market for these woods, as wood turners, musical instrument makers and other craftspeople crave fruitwood and nut wood that is generally unavailable other than walnut, cherry and European pear. As my business grew, I started creating crates, knives, picture frames and spoons, which brought more business from woodworkers looking for raw lumber. I decline to sell any exotic or tropical woods, especially from rainforests. That's not my market, and besides, everyone else deals in them. That's a saturated and exploitive market.

Besides an interest in milling fruitwood, I took an early interest in what is now called the Adobe Creative Suite of software programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver. My specialties include restoring photographs from the Old World and using the LAB colorspace to enhance color optimization.

Thanks for coming to the site, and I look forward to any questions you may have about the harvesting, drying and use of fruitwood, an amazing and always surprising renewable resource. Nowadays I only burn fruitwood cutoffs to stay warm.
