Announcement   I have been designing jewelry in Alaska for over 40 years and work almost exclusively with precious metals in the lost wax technique. I draw inspiration from Nature's own wealth of imagery. I am particularly drawn to capture animals and plants which have a whimsical theme or romantic symbolism. This often challenges me to find that perfect bead or stone which compliments the design in a meaningful way.

Jewelry being a craft, should be well made, durable, and above all else - wearable. But it also can be an art form which magics the wearer with beauty. My goal is to create jewelry hand crafted for a lifetime of enjoyment at an affordable price.

I received it yesterday. It is even more beautiful than I imagined it would be. Thank you. I'll post a picture of it with her reaction and a review of what she says when she opens it.

About

Judie Gumm Designs

Born and raised in upstate New York, Judie was first introduced to the lost wax process of jewelry making in 1970 in Denver, Colorado where she explored her creativity. In 1972, as the single mother of a five year old daughter, Judie relocated to Alaska. While working as a waitress and creating one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces on the side, she attended the University of Alaska where she received her first formal training in metalwork. In 1974, she was recommended by her UAF professors to teach a class in lost wax jewelry for the artist in residence program at Service Hanshew High School in Anchorage, Alaska.

In the early 1980’s, she created the blueberry and cranberry designs out of homesickness while living in Boston, MA. Upon returning to Alaska, a local shop owner recognized the beauty and marketability of her designs and encouraged her to begin a production business. In 1985, she created 30 pieces for her new production line, hired an employee, and began marketing her work through craft and trade shows. Since that time Judie Gumm Designs has expanded to include over 300 pieces and a permanent showroom located in downtown Ester, Alaska. In addition, Judie's work is carried in gift shops and art galleries throughout Alaska and the lower 48 and has been offered through a number of mail order catalogs. She continues to design one of a kind and commission work for clients, some as far away as Saudi Arabia.

Judie continues to hand-design all pieces and is assisted in the production process by one full-time employee. Judie's husband and co-owner, Richard, manages the business's finances. As the business expands, she strives to continue to create distinctive, high quality, nature inspired jewelry.

A note about "custom" orders:
We encourage inquiries about modifying the layout of existing line pieces, however we do not offer full start-to-finish lost wax pieces on request at this time.

Each jewelry item will be placed in a jewelry box with padding or a silk pouch. It will be carded, placed in a zip-lock bag with a strip of anti-tarnish material included. There is also a small care card with contact information and a short bio on Judie included with each purchase.
Our hook earrings all come with rubber ear-nuts. Our post ear-nuts are hypoallergenic titanium.
All pins come with an "insurance policy" which is a rubber nut slipped on the pin stem once it is attached to the fabric but before the pin catch is closed. This insures the pin will not be lost if the clasp opens.
