JudyMoon's Shop Announcement

Watercolors, ink and a lot in-between.

Welcome to the gallery of professional, award winning, Oregon artist, Judy Moon. Her paintings with their vivid colors contrasting with black ink hang in Scotland, England, and the Netherlands, as well as many states of the U.S. Ask her why she loves to paint and she’ll answer, “The world is a happy place when I’m painting…my heart fills with peace and the joy of creation.”

She started painting early in life as a means of creating her own happy reality, contrasting with the bleak challenges of her life. Polio at 18 months old placed her in an iron lung until she healed enough to survive nine corrective surgeries, metal braces and crutches, and years of recuperation in bed. Hoping to alleviate the loneliness of isolation, her mother bought her paper, paints, and brushes and was soon delighted by her daughter's new passion.

Ms. Moon won her first award for her artwork at age five from a national contest on afternoon cartoons. At twelve she won first place in the Southern California School Districts Art Competition and at eighteen she competed in a national art competition sponsored by Seventeen Magazine, and won a scholarship for professional training. She attended Western Oregon University in a wheelchair, majoring in art, math, and elementary education. She graduated with honors and won first place in the highly acclaimed art competition, "The Governor's Trophy." Her painting hangs in the governor's mansion.

For the next fifteen years she taught in public schools from her wheelchair. The students were charmed by her courage and positive attitude. She taught her students the joy of creating and the philosophy of the Post Impressionists: the camera freed artists from the tight restraints of portrait painting to interpret their own personal reality.

Since retiring from the classroom, she keeps busy creating artwork, donating her time as bookkeeper for the local art guild, and selling her paintings on Etsy and in local art festivals and gallery shows. Most recently she won first in show in the Oregon Historical Museum Competition and received an award from the Oregon State Disabilities Foundation for her artwork and volunteer work teaching art to children.
Her most recent series of paintings is called "Mother and Child" celebrating the loving bond with her mother, the woman who placed a paint brush in her hand many years earlier.
