My love for creating with paint and clay
My name is Judy Frenz I'm 65 years old and a self taught artist that started to draw from a very young age about 5 years old, i was born in Oakland, California.
I decided to moved to Oregon but before I moved to Oregon, in 1974 i was told i had glaucoma in my eyes, its the same that my mom had and went blind with, i did the drops for about 8 months or longer, when i saw the eye doctor again the glaucoma was gone and the doctors have never heard of it going away to me that was a Blessing.
Then later after i moved to Salem, Oregon i went into business with someone that worked with wood, that’s when i taught myself to paint with oils in making clocks from maple burls from there i went on in painted on everything from saws from lumber mills, canvas, cow skulls, hides and more, my paintings were an exploration of thoughts and feelings with things I saw. Then i did art shows, and small galleries, at one time i was asked to teach. I also worked in Sears Department store in selling my artwork during the holidays from Thanksgiving to Christmas every year. I also made two bar tops from maple wood on the small bar top 13 feet long i painted a western town along in doing more artwork for the bar, i also did the Salem State Fair for 2 years, i did so many art and craft shows i lost count, but at one art and craft show something happen to me i didn't know what it was until about 2001 and that was when i found out about panic attacks that were Social Anxiety spills that i had been going through for all that time.
When i was in Salem, Oregon I done the state fear i was in the news paper, and i also got ribbons for my artwork, along with other news paper write-ups about me and my artwork along with being on the radio.
Then later after i moved back to California i did flea markets, art shows and craft shows then i started to do spiritual artwork were i was given visions in what to paint when sometimes when i read my Bible, or when i would lessen to gospel music, God would show me what to paint to have hope, values, and trust in myself and in God, that's when people would ask me about my spiritual artwork and some told me they saw the same thing in their dreams, to me that was confirming my work, that's when i started to build a stronger foundation and compassion, with my inspirations, and with my faith.
I'm moving back to Oregon this June or July, 2013 to a small town in the eastern part of Oregon, its a western type of town they have a large Rodeo in the town and have tourist there which will be great for me, and i will be doing more artwork so be looking for more work later this year 2013 and keep checking back.
A Little More History on Me:
Now back to my panic attacks they got so bad later i refused to leave my home or even go to check my mail. Then in the late 1980s early 1990s i started to have seizures, epilepsy spells along with a rear type of migraine headaches that look like a stroke that paralyzed me. The seizures paralysis me and looks like a stroke and lasses for 30 minutes or to 1 or 3 hours at a time, the seizures have been unable to be controlled by any doctor that i have seen. Then in 2004 i found out i could have a service dog, my first service dog didn't work out very long so now with me i have Toby my 2ed service dog i got in 2009 as a 8 week old puppy that i trained with the help of a trainer now I’m able to go into stores or any place on my own, he alerts me before i have a seizures and yes now and then I still have a panic attack, but its easier with me having Toby, people just don’t know or understand how a service dog helps someone.
With me having so many seizures i don’t get to paint as much as i would like to, I’m also unable to drive doctors stopped me from that years ago. But when i do paint it gives me so much pleasure to show what i love, i also work with clay which is something i just started when i did the painting with the clay cross for the A.M.E. Zion Methodists Church that you'll see within my artwork as will on the photos that are on this page display was the first time i worked with the clay. Then i made the little Toby's from clay with real dog heir from my Toby.
But I have to say in having Toby in my life has helped me so much, that i wished i had a service dog years ago. So I’m saying to anyone that sees someone with a service animal please don’t get upset with that person that has one, cause not everyone is going to look disabled and don’t try to pet the service animal cause then it districts the animal from doing its work.
