About

Julia Astreou Woven Textiles

[This video shows the making of a warp. To clarify for non-weavers; the warp is the stretched threads on the loom in which a design is woven. Since I am using traditional Cypriot looms, I make my warp in the traditional way, which is quite physical (but still enjoyable) and takes a couple of hours to complete. All the handwoven pieces in my shop start in this way!]

I am Julia Astreou, a textile designer, artist and researcher, specialising in woven textiles.

My workspace and showroom is housed in a 19th century home, a fine example of local Cypriot architecture which has been in the family for six generations!

I own four traditional Cypriot looms on which I create all the pieces found on my Etsy shop. I am interested in the construction of fabrics based on traditional weaving and embroidery techniques of Cyprus but also in developing contemporary designs based on these techniques. I also use my theatrical costume designs, paintings and woven wall hangings as starting points for developing woven fabrics for house wears and accessories.

By utilising unorthodox materials such as cane, raw wool, sisal, copper wire and plexiglass, I like to give my fabrics a contemporary twist with intriguing patterns, textures and transparencies.

Weaving enthusiasts are welcome to my workshop to learn and hopefully preserve the ancient craft of hand weaving! I offer traditional weaving lessons but also encourage students to experiment with their own designs.

  • Metalworker

    Nicosia, Cyprus

All lampshades in my shop are handwoven and turned into three dimensional objects with the help of a metalworker who produces the iron frames on which the woven fabrics wrap around.

  • Tailor

    Nicosia, Cyprus

All my handwoven textiles are transformed into accessories and home wear with the help of a tailor. After the fabrics are handwoven, they are cut off from the loom and taken to the tailor who creates the final result you see in my shop listings.
