About

The Story behind Julia Smith Ceramics

My name is Julia Smith and I am a ceramic maker based near Inverness in Scotland. All the pottery in my shop is thrown or hand built and hand printed designs are added to the glazed surfaces inspired by my local natural environment and the simple pleasures of everyday life.

I discovered ceramics whilst at art school in Glasgow studying to be a product designer. I was immediately drawn to the messy organic nature of clay and the pyromaniac in me was fascinated by the changing effects fire has on clay and glazed surfaces.

I have been working with clay since graduating from art school in 1996 initially working on public and community art projects in Glasgow then developing my own pottery range and moving to the Highlands in 2010.

I live in a small quiet village on the banks of the Moray Firth where dolphins can occasionally be spotted. You will mostly find me in my studio listening to Radio 4 making my orders or developing new forms and glazes.

I am always experimenting to keep my work fresh and challenging and visited Denmark in 2014 on a ceramics residency developing direct printing on clay techniques.

A trip to Iceland in 2015 led to a new body of work made with black lava-like clay and colourful organic flowing glazes inspired by the fascinating glacial/ volcanic landscape.

If I am not in the studio you will probably find me in my garden tending my vegetable plot or in the kitchen making experimental dinners.

Additional policies and FAQs
*How to Care for the Pots*
My earthenware work is dishwasher safe, though I recommend a combination of handwashing and the dishwasher, since handmade pots are inherently less durable than industrial. People have been known to put my earthenware pots in the microwave, but it is not something I recommend because it is the iron (metal) that is giving the clay its rich red color. This high iron content can crack pots in a microwave. I fire my clay hotter than normal earthenware in order to vitrify the body and make it as durable as possible.

*Custom Orders*
I am happy to discuss custom orders. Please contact me for more information or to discuss your idea. Thanks for visiting my shop.
