About

And then there was clay...

I am Justin Hart a ceramic artist and educator located in Evanston, IL. I have been working in clay most of my life and enjoy the open possibilities available from starting with nothing and ending in something. Currently I am a stay at home dad taking care of my new son, I squeak out studio time when available and use the proceeds from my sales to help support our young family. In making functional work I seek to mesh the tightness of molded production work with the looseness of the hand-made, the two vibrate nicely next to each other. I feel that ceramics is also a very geologic process much like the processes that go into making of the materials we use therefor in my work you will find a layering of surfaces, materials and processes. You will regularly experience multiple fired surfaces and accretions of multiple production methods. One could think of this as sedimentary in so many ways, each layer adding more depth and enriching the experience.

Hi and thank you for looking around my shop. Justin Hart Ceramics is me just one person working in a communal ceramics studio in Evanston, Illinois. My work is all hand made in some fashion. I put it this way because I employ many methods of making ceramic objects from wheel thrown to hand built to molded and slipcast. Often more than one method is used in a single piece but rest assured that even the molded components are made by me using molds I have created.

Most of my work is high fired and durable. I uses a multiple firing method applying layers of glaze and decoration to the piece and re-firing at lower and lower temperatures until complete. Also note that as I said above all my pieces are handmade and therefore no single piece is perfect nor is any set perfectly identical.

Favorite my pieces you like and review my shop you can also find more at:
