About

Undercover Artist

One day I left the corporate world behind and I never looked back....

Since early childhood, I've always been attracted to ornate objects, vessels and tiny treasures. Though I've always been creative with an active imagination, I've never quite considered myself to be an "artist." But I believe that art comes from inspiration, and when I discovered metalsmithing, I became very inspired by the process of working and manipulating metals. In January 2004, after leaving my stressful corporate job, I enrolled in a beginner metalsmith class at a local community arts center. I was hooked, and over the next two and half years I enrolled in one or two classes each quarter.

In June of 2006, opportunity fell into my lap and I was hired to work two days a week as the studio assistant to a locally well-known jeweler and gallery owner in Roswell, GA. Working under an established, successful jeweler has really been an incredible learning experience, greatly accelerating my skills and my confidence. I still find it hard to call myself an artist but now I am able to combine my love for tiny treasures with the skills and craftsmanship I've developed as a metalsmith. My work is play, and every day I get to create my own original designs using precious metals and gem stones. Occasionally, I use gold, brass or copper, but Argentium sterling silver is currently my metal of choice. Why? Because it is highly tarnish resistant and it doesn't produce fire scale, sometimes impossible to remove and just a nuisance.

Today, I live in my home town of Marietta, Georgia with my husband and our cat named “Waffles." When I'm not creating my own jewelry designs or working as a studio assistant, I like spending time with my family, gardening or entertaining friends. I have definitely found my happy place in this life and I couldn't be more blessed.

Welcome to my Etsy shop! My name is Berlin and I hope you enjoy perusing my work. I have designed & crafted all of the items for sale here. I am an artisan and I love the craft of metalsmithing. I create jewelry because I love the process and the outcome is immediately rewarding. I am inspired by many different cultures, styles and themes. It can take months before a new design idea becomes a reality. But I don't believe in making a beautiful piece of jewelry if I have to sacrifice wearabilty, durability or comfort. Initially I focus on the design and follow with solid construction. None of my pieces are cast or manufactured and I make my own findings when and where possible. I handcraft each and every piece to last, to be worn, and to be loved.

I live in the North Atlanta, Georgia suburbs with my husband, our cat Cricket and two house bunnies, Heidi & Gretchen. When I'm not creating my own jewelry designs or working as a jewelry studio assistant, I enjoy spending time with my pets, my family, entertaining friends or gardening.

Most skin discoloration from jewelry isn't caused by an allergy-it's a reaction (oxidation) between our skin and the metals used in jewelry, especially when the jewelry touches areas that perspire. Some people have body chemistry that's more prone to staining than others. Salt content of the air, humidity, body lotion and many other environmental factors can also play a part.

A few quick tips~
To keep your jewelry from tarnishing when you’re not wearing it, store in a airtight container or zip lock bag. There are also many anti-tarnishing products available, such as anti-tarnish strips or jewelry boxes with anti-tarnish liner.

Don't leave in the bathroom, near heater, oven or in direct sunlight for long periods of time as the color will change. Items can be cleaned with a silver polishing cloth (I recommend Goddard's - I have them for sale in my Etsy store).
