About

KJ Artworks - Karen J Lauseng - Jewelry Designs, Mosaics, Prayer Beads and Tutorials

Silver City, New Mexico is a wonderful place to live and work. Making art is my passion and there is no better place for creative inspiration than Southwest New Mexico.

I am so pleased to have been able to share my art and jewelry designs and tutorials in numerous Lark Crafts publications as well as Art Jewelry, Lapidary Journal /Jewelry Artist, Metalsmith, Art Doll Quarterly, The Craft's Report, Creative Home Arts and South Dakota magazines.

Each piece offered for sale is original, with its own design and energy and created with its own unique properties. My signature line combines sterling silver with mokume game and sterling cast in cuttlebone. The mokume game I use is purchased sheet metal from Reactive Metals and the cuttlebone castings are all done here in the studio. All of the work is made by me in my studio in Silver City and is a one of a kind work of art.

I was once asked to duplicate a bracelet for a friend of a customer and reluctantly agreed to do so. I was told they were very close friends and wanted to have identical bracelets. On the first attempt, the bracelet I tried to make was impossible to complete and I ended up burning a hole through it. The second bracelet turned out perfect, however, when it arrived at the Albuquerque Museum, the sales associate called and asked why I had sent a large drawer pull? After further investigation we discovered that the package had been run over by the mail truck. Needles to say, I did not attempt to make another and although the client was disappointed, I am certain her friend was pleased beyond words.

In addition to the more elegant jewelry offered, I like to challenge my creativity and am always in the studio making something. Owls have caught my attention most recently and they are insistent on being made as mosaic art either with glass and tile or from polymer clay and found objects. You never know what might come up next, as I am always open to trying something new.

My jewelry has been sold through galleries in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Silver City New Mexico, as well as outlets in Kansas, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Texas. It has become too time consuming for me to sell through galleries and my hope is that this Etsy store will provide me with more studio time. Currently my work is only available through this outlet.

Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Thanks and best wishes, Karen
