About

Sculpture by KJ Bishop

I wear two creative hats; I'm a science fiction and fantasy author, best known for my award-winning surreal/decadent/western/fantasy novel The Etched City, and I'm also an artist. I've always been keen on making art in one way or another, but when I took up sculpture a few years ago I knew I'd found something special -- an ideal medium for indulging my desire to create characters and creatures from my imagination.

I work in a figurative style, usually with an element of fantasy, whimsy or weirdness. I often find myself working under the influence of myth and folklore, or the memory of old toys and ornaments from days gone by.

All my work is cast in metal (current pieces on Etsy are brass, and I also work in bronze) using the lost-wax method. I make an original model, usually out of wax or oil clay, or sometimes other materials, then have it cast in a foundry. My casting is done in Thailand, where I've lived since 2005. The casting process is all by hand, from mould-making to finishing and patina. I work closely with the foundry to ensure the integrity of each piece.

I make both limited edition sculptures and open editions. Thus far most of my sculpture has been on a small scale, with cost in mind but also because I simply have an affinity for small items!

I write fiction and make sculptures. I've always loved art, but working in 3D has given me an artistic "home".

Hi and welcome! I make sculptures in cast brass, often featuring anthropomorphic beings or other imaginary figures. I tend to explore themes of play, mystery, solitude and strangeness, but I go wherever inspiration takes me. Thank you for taking the time to visit my shop, and please feel free to contact me.

Additional policies and FAQs
I try to describe all items accurately. Photos are representative of the item you will receive. I'm always extremely happy to take extra pictures and answer any questions about the item you are purchasing.

Variations:
The very nature of the lost-wax process means that every item is unique. Minor flaws and small differences in shape and colour are normal. However, some pieces are more unique than others! If a piece is in some way notably different from its fellows, due to a quirk of casting or patina or anything else, I'll give it a separate listing with the difference noted.

Editions:
The pieces here are in editions of 49, 95, or open (no limit). All limited edition pieces are numbered and signed with my initials. Some open edition pieces are signed, some aren't. Information re edition and signature is in the listing.
