    About

    The KJ Bags Story

When Kendal wanted a new messenger bag in middle school, Mom said, "let's make your own." By choosing his own fabrics and used t-shirts a one-of-a-kind bag was created and all the kids at school loved it. They all asked him to make them one, in their style. We obliged, one bag at a time! Slowly, each member of our family has become involved in the chalk bag making business. We turned our old bedrooms in our parent's house, into a fully operational sewing shop. Where once our beds and desks, now industrial sewing machines hum into the wee hours. We are dedicated to making fun, functional chalk bags that fit your personality - while upholding our values of social responsibility.

As crafters, we take pride in fabricating bags by hand and steadily showing people that imported, mass-consumer products are not their only affordable option.
We are committed to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. We source fabric from a variety of sources: upholsterers, furniture stores, sail shops, second hand stores, etc. The fabric we use would otherwise enter the waste stream.

10 years ago we started making bags with the simple idea that people are unique, and that the bags they use in daily life can and should reflect that individuality. We hope you enjoy.

Hi, I'm the owner/ operator of KJ Bags. I'm a crafter, rock climber, and a practicing anthropological archaeologist in Tampa, Florida. For me, every object worked by human hands tells a story.

By day, I manage two rock climbing gyms. By night, I'm a wine drinker, a poet, a fun-maker, and a chalk bag shaker! I love developing new concepts and nagging my lil brother until he bends to my will.

      Shipper, Man At The Machine

Dad wakes up at 4am and starts sewing for KJbags before going to his "day job." His is meticulous and doesn't like when it's not perfect. He has an eye for straight lines and sews most of the inner-construction of our bags. A man behind the scenes!

Mom - the reason this company took off the ground. Mom's DIY attitude taught us that if you want something, you can make it yourself. She made a pattern for Kendal's first messenger bag for middle school and inspired us to start making chalk bags!

Our family company is small scale. While few in number, we take pride in our ability to simultaneously handle large wholesale orders and devote the necessary time to detailed custom work. Our designs are aesthetically classic, practical, and made to maximize durability. Our fabrics come from a variety of sources. We are dedicated to practicing environmental and social responsibility. We predominantly use re-purposed fabrics. We get our hands on high-quality fabrics by purchasing them as scrap cuts from upholsterers, seamstresses, and sailing shops. We pass the savings and quality fabric on to you. Buying one of our bags keeps quality fabrics from entering the waste stream, and supports local economies here in the USA!
