My Desire For Beautiful Jewelry turned into Custom Jewelry Shop
When I was about thirteen, we had just moved and money was tight. I hated asking for things I didn't need, like jewelry. So I took some old jewelry, took it apart and made my own jewelry. And so started my addiction to the wide world of Beads.
After late night TV marathons and many, many, many cups of coffee, making jewelry and experimenting with different designs, the thought occurred to me that I could sell my jewelry for a profit.
That was almost seven years ago. Five years ago, I was at the library checking out books about beading and jewelry, I came across a different book about miniatures, reigniting a fascination that had long since disappeared, along with the popularity of Polly Pocket.
The miniature bowls I make now did not stem from that book, however. Those came from experimenting with instructions from YouTube on how to make bottle cap earrings three years later.
But I digress. In the beginning, my motivation was not to buy what I could make for myself and to use the resources at hand. For materials, I used paper clips and peeled the paper off of twisty ties from the grocery store and strung beads on those. I have since moved on to higher quality materials.
But this idea of not buying what I can make has lasted to this day. I have made some of my own necklace stands out of cardboard and felt, and a bracelet rack out of paper towel tubes, a foam block and yarn. I made my own background to take pictures on out of cardboard and tape. But what I'm using now is a glass display case in my parent's living room.
One of my goals is to put 'custom' back into 'customer'. I want work with my customers to create a truly unique piece of jewelry.
Hopefully, I can start turning a profit soon. I would love not to have a 'normal' job. As my dad once told me, "Make money at what you love, and you will never work a day in your life."
