Announcement    I am American Impressionist Painter, Karen Tarlton - painting with a unique sense of color, texture and light. The palette knife, allow me to stay loose, merging colors and sculpting wet paint into a dynamic final product. My paintings take on a multi-dimensional form and are easily recognized for their use of heavy-texture and bold colors to emphasize nature’s spontaneity and beauty in a modern, abstract way.
More about my work:
No two of my oil paintings are alike. Each one is painted from my heart with love and soul. Here you will find my unique palette knife paintings and prints of my paintings. I create lively, engaging, colorful art, and my work is widely collected across the globe.

Recognized for my paintings of angels and children in motion in my unique style, I use a palette knife to build energetic layers of color. I paint with the palette knife because it gives me the opportunity to interact with paint in a very tangible, expressionistic way. Using a knife in this way allows the paint to stand out and create a lively and impressionistic work. The surfaces of my paintings are very tactile, sometimes resembling a mosaic of palette knife strokes.

As of 2000, I have been creating a new painting almost every day. My artwork brings birds, cows, horses, flowers, and my unique angels to life. Landscapes, cityscapes, and boat-filled harbors become illuminated by majestic, textured light. I strive to infuse my paintings with energy, intimacy and brilliant color.

I work both plein air, painting on location or from life in the studio, but I also enjoy experimenting with photos to create larger paintings. I am influenced by all the Impressionists, and with the same ideology, I paint to capture the essence of a moment in time, with confident palette knife strokes. I try not to fuss over the small detail, but rather to capture primarily the form, mood and light, working spontaneously, with positive energy and imagination.

Video summary: Watch me paint a demo filmed from a recent workshop. Had to speed it up a bit!

The artist's world is limitless. It can be found anywhere, far from where she lives or a few feet away. It is always on her doorstep.

I am a military spouse, married over 30 years. Recognized for my paintings of angels, children and animals in motion and my unique style using a palette knife to build energetic layers of color. I also paint textural florals, landscapes and cityscapes and my work has a large online worldwide following. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to study the artwork of master painters across the country. My travels to Europe and many military moves across our country have provided a new dimension to my art in terms of subject matter and application.
Sweeping color, texture and impressionism are the words that describe what I love to do. I am more concerned with creating a mood with rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color. My travels all over the world as a military spouse have inspired me intensely. Nothing inspires me more than a trip to a new destination and we have moved 20 times in 27 years to states all over the country and places all over the world. I am inspired by a sunset, a child, or a tree in morning light. The master painters that have most inspired me are Van Gogh and Picasso for their unbelievable vision, work ethic, and passion.
I work primarily on canvas in oil with a palette knife, using this technique for many years now. My techniques allow for interesting textural possibilities and complex color layers in an expressive, impressionistic style which borders on abstract.

I am currently licensed with companies such as Uptown Art, All My Walls, Dianoche Designs, AFrame Audio, and others who sell images of my artwork on blankets, towels, rugs, and illuminated canvas among other items. You may find my art reproduced by these companies on sites such as One King's Lane, Rue La La, Josh and Main and Walmart.
In 2015, I was commissioned by Tupelo Honey Cafe, Inc to create Series of paintings for a new Tupelo Honey Restaurant in Arlington, VA.
