Why aprons?

I love the make-do-and-mend attitude and the do-it-yourself mantra. When I put on an apron, I’m ready to make, mend, or create. Nothing says “I’m here, in the now, and ready to work” quite like putting on an apron. To me, it exemplifies the DIY, homesteading, and eco-conscious lifestyles. A home with an apron says this is a home with a do-er.

I make almost all of my meals, sides, and sauces from scratch because I have a long list of food allergies and intolerances. I learned to cook by trial and error. Learning about spice and flavor combinations through ingredients lists (of pre-package food that I couldn't eat), recipe books, and tv chefs. Adapting everything into something I could eat as I went. I learned I love cooking, especially baking, and even more so, I love sharing my food with others.

My sewing story is somewhat similar. My mom taught me to sew when I was six. Since then, I have learned mostly through trial and error, because as someone with dyslexia, reading patterns is not my strong suit but my visual and spatial awareness are. When working on a project, it's color that grabs me, and I love mixing and matching the fabrics. That moment when you know you're on to something. Gets me every time. Much like creating a fabulous meal.

I love food, good company, sewing, and I believe in being good to the planet (it's the only one we've got!). Katiedidliving is my creative outlet where I can pass on eco-friendly goods to others who love food and entertaining too.

Shop policies

Everything in my shop was made by me (Katie) with love.

I proudly work with repurposed, up cycled, and natural materials to reduce the impact these goods would have had on this planet: from using materials that would have gone into a landfill, to keeping new textiles from being made, to building a market for repurposed and vintage goods.

For my textiles, I re-use clothes, curtains, and other textiles and also use off cuts, end-of-bolt, and fabric samples. I also have non-textile based goodies in my shop: some are vintage finds with more life left in them, others are inspired by the materials I find- like wooden bowls, an old curtain rod, or plastic water bottles.

Repurposing saves energy by reusing material instead of making new material from scratch (Growing cotton, for example, for new fabric involves a lot of water, chemicals and burning of fossil fuels in the growing, washing, and dying processes), and upcycling reduces waste.
