I first became interested in ceramics as part of a kitchen tiling project many years ago. After a futile attempt to find just the right handmade accent tile, I enrolled in a tile-making class at a local pottery studio. This began an utter obsession with clay.

I find the tile "canvas" an irresistible lure for incorporating detail, texture and the vibrancy of color. My inspiration is drawn primarily from the outdoors and the beautiful place I live. I am also inspired by the many subtle aspects of design in various formats, such as the texture and pattern of a rug or the palate of a stained glass window.

My technique has evolved through a process of trial and error and self-directed study over more than a decade. Most pieces incorporate carving, texturing or stamping. Designs can be repeated by using handmade molds or hand-carved linoleum or clay stamps. I have always enjoyed infusing my tiles with detail and am always exploring new avenues for expression. I consider making ceramic pendants an extension of making tiles, just on a smaller scale as I use many of the same techniques. Jewelry making also provides an added creative opportunity for combining the ceramic with other mediums, such as leather and metal.

In addition to offering my wares online, I enjoy participating in local art sales and being a member of a cooperative art gallery in Flagstaff, Arizona.
