A Brief Biography

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, I grew up during the "cellulose” (film) age. I had the opportunity to work and experiment with various cameras and film formats, ranging from Instamatics & the Kodak Brownie Flash 20, to TLRs; I even worked with the old polaroid-style press cameras that used saline to process B&W negatives and prints. My medium format expansion began with the Mamiya 645 system and culminated with the Bronica SQ.

My professional photographic journey began in 1981 with the purchase of an old 1967 Nikon Nikkormat FS with an f2 50mm lens and two rolls of Kodak color print film for $35. A totally mechanical body, it contained no meter and didn’t have an on-camera “hot” shoe for flash photography.

I shot my first freelance assignment, a surfing contest, six months later; two of those photos were published in the Beaches Leader newspaper. From there, I shot freelance for several local publications to include Jacksonville Magazine and The Financial News & Daily Record. Among my subjects were several business leaders and politicians to include then Florida Governor Bob Graham. In 1985, I began shooting product photography and executive portraits for my full time employer.

My photographic education includes the New York Institute of Photography courses and Monte Zucker's "Portraiture & Wedding Course," everything I could get my hands on to read and shooting everything I could just to learn from real world experience.

In 1988, I started work as an ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter, working in the computer field and shooting photography. In 1994, I closed the photography business and moved solely into computers & technology. In April 2017, with my wife's full encouragement and support, I returned to shooting full time.

I have reestablished "Kevin Spargur Photography" in which "Kevin's Outdoor Photography" is an integral part. I provide both Digital and 35mm film portraiture. On the website, I have a newsletter entitled "The Digital Shutter" designed to provide information that will benefit and help others with their own photographic endeavors. From the website, you can navigate to our "Gallery Wall" which also has some limited stock images but mainly serves to provide private galleries for our clients.

Current professional memberships include PPA (Professional Photographers of America) and the local PPA affiliate, Jacksonville Professional Photographers Guild (JPPG), formerly known as "PPSNF" (Professional Photographers Society of North Florida).
