From the Nepal Himalaya to you, with love.

We (Dave and Prabi) met at university where we studied forestry together. After a few years of travelling together a little, completing a Permaculture Design Course and living in Nepal, we wanted to make a difference.

Our first motivation for establishing Khali Khutta (prounounced “Kha-lee Khotah”) is to address some of the negative trends we have witnessed within rural communities in Nepal. Namely, a shift of people from rural to urban areas and also an increase in harmful and inappropriate farming techniques (intense mechanisation and use of agrochemicals). The causes for these changes are many fold, but major reasons are the limited opportunities for rural populations (especially farmers) and the low status of farmers within society. We wanted to stop this trend. We also wanted to encourage the cottage industries that used to be very common in Nepal. Hemp and nettle fabrics were common, with some ethnicities relying on the income generated from weaving with these natural fibres.

Our second motivation is involved in trying to improve the situation I mentioned above. There is a huge amount of cheap, mass produced stuff on the market, from soaps to yoga mats and one-use (or maybe two if we’re good) plastic shopping bags to lip balms in disposable plastic tubes or pots. Often, even “organic” or “bio” products are still packaged in plastic dispensers (like your favourite lip balm) and “bags for life” are still made from harmful plastic – the shop may replace a broken one, but that doesn’t really avoid the problem of plastic landfill sites and pollution from their production!

Our range or products is intended to include things that we use maybe everyday without really thinking about it. Soap, lip balm, a shopping bag, or even a yoga mat which can all be produced with little if any thought or focus on their environmental impacts. These items are usually very cheap which encourages us to use them once, throw them away and buy a new one – why not, it’s only a few pence or cents!

We have designed a range of high quality goods that you will love. We use all natural ingredients and materials, sourced almost exclusively from Nepal (we hope in the near future to source EXCLUSIVELY from Nepal). These materials and ingredients are produced in rural areas, where the people growing them get paid properly. We work with these farmers throughout Nepal to produce fibres, fabrics and other ingredients as well as tailors to stitch our yoga mats and bags and shopping bags.

Our wish is that we all think a little more about where things come from, how they are produced and (equally important as all those things), where the money we pay for them goes. Buying from Khali Khutta means that your money is going towards helping sustain the livelihoods of rural Nepali people. It means that their traditional handicraft skills are being safeguarded and promoted. It also means that you’ll be receiving an awesome item that you’ll love, your friends will love and you know won’t be having a negative impact on the world in its production or disposal (it’s all biodegradable!)

Hi! We're Prabighya and Dave.

Welcome to our Etsy shop. Below is some info about what we do, our motivations and what Khali Khutta aims to do.

Our name, "Khali Khutta" (prounounced “Kha-lee Kho-tuh”) means Bare Foot in Nepali. We chose this name to represent our attitude to our lives and business; our “barefoot” approach allows us to know where our raw materials come from, how they are processed and who makes them. This is important to allows us to take care of our producers and the world we live in.

We work with local people and rural communities in the Himalaya to create unique, all natural, eco-friendly items that help to contribute to the livelihoods of Nepali people. All our products are hand crafted with care, right here in Nepal.

We want to create an alternative option by providing genuine, honest products with more direct links between producers and consumers. We spend time working with producers and rural communities to design our unique range of products. Our longer-term goal is for all the profit from sales to go back to rural communities in Nepal.

We maintain an awareness of our motivation for the growth and development of Khali Khutta as a business - none of our products are made with the sole motivation of profit to the business, but rather to create income for our producers and thus support rural livelihoods, traditional skills and the future of rural Nepali communities and their environment. This means that if we cannot create a product without plastic, or we cannot achieve a certain colour or shade with natural dyes, then we keep working to design that product without plastic or create that colour. If this is not possible we do not make that product or use that colour/shade.

We source almost exclusively from farmers in Nepal. Our materials are natural, cultivated organically or harvested from plants growing wild in the Himalayas.

All of our products are, and will always be, handmade in Nepal and biodegradable.
