KinderCotton's Shop Policies
Every parent knows that babies need a LOT of stuff! Unfortunately, anyone who has wandered through the typical mega-store can tell you there aren't too many choices for those of us with a strong sense of environmental and global economic responsibility. My experience led me to create my own baby items for my newborn, made from 100% organic, fair trade fabrics. These fabrics are certified organic at each stage of their production, from growing to milling to printing using organic dyes. They are also independently fair trade certified, ensuring that these materials do not contribute to inhumane labor practices in their production.
Why organic? Conventionally grown cotton is among the most chemical-dependent crops and also is used as material for the majority of the world's fabrics. As the global population continues to grow, the heavy use of chemicals such as insecticides, extreme soil exhaustion and water shortages that result from overproduction to meet growing demand have a huge net impact on global ecology, not to mention on the lives of those who live in the regions where the cotton is produced. By choosing 100% organic cotton, you are supporting a growth industry built on environmental awareness, sustainability, and fundamental respect for the people and ecosystems which produce the product.
Why fair trade? Quite simply, the artisans and laborers who produce the cotton retain a bulk of the proceeds from its sale, to improve the quality of their own lives and reinvest in production. Fair trade certification means that an independent auditor has knowledge of the entire production process, and has verified that buyers have paid a fair market price for the product.
Besides just being able to feel good about having made a responsible choice, you will feel the difference in quality the first time you touch these products. These fabrics are thicker, warmer, and just plain feel softer and sturdier than the mass-produced goods you've seen in the chain retailers. I personally couldn't wait to wrap my baby in these items! I hope that you have the same reaction when you receive your purchase.
