About

Designing for the whimsical time of childhood since 2011

HISTORY - the beginning

Even as a child I displayed more than a passing interest in design and repurposing; my favorite pastime was twisting and knotting my mother’s fabric scraps into doll clothes. As a teenager, I indulged in snipping my father’s jeans (usually with permission) into miniskirts and handbags. However, it was in adulthood, when “Pregnant” magically appeared on that deceptively innocuous stick that creating fused from lingering hobby to necessity.

At 23 years old, with a psychology degree from Tulane University, former addresses in Manhattan, New Orleans, Oahu, Raleigh, Miami, and far less impressive home décor, my husband and I packed up our paltry possessions from our Sunny Isles Beach apartment, crazy lab mix Coco, and my six month pregnant belly and moved back to the Northeast.

Determined and ecstatic to devote myself to motherhood, I delved into preparing a nursery for my baby girl. I quickly realized all the little touches, any décor outside of the basics of furniture, I had to create myself. I taught myself how to crochet, hand sew, and embroider, and starting experimenting. This compounded during holidays, birthdays, and lo and behold, creating, repurposing, refinishing, and upcycling began to wholeheartedly inspire a new life path and direction for myself and my family. There truly is an art to making and reinventing, and the product, in many cases, far exceeds the presence of its former being. Not only the foundation of King Soleil, the use of upcycled and sustainable materials has permanently changed my world perspective and helped achieve a balance in my life and how the lives of my family impact our planet.

HOW KING SOLEIL WAS, QUITE LITERALLY, BORN - the shop

After my son, Kingston, was born just under 2 years after Soleil, I knew our family needed some extra support and while I was totally committed to being a stay at home mom, the daily grunge of responsibility was taking its toll. I had a degree under my belt, but after some soul searching found that more than anything, family was absolutely most important to me and I was determined to find a way to work from home.

With about $5 of pocket change I visited my local thrift store and purchased a shopping cart worth of linens, sheets, pillow cases, and drapes. I cut them up and with a huge crochet hook from my aunt, crocheted them into rugs. With some hope, encouragement from my hubby and family, and a big 'gulp' in 2011 I opened my first online King Soleil shop.

Fast forward four years later, with the birth of our third child, River, and King Soleil has grown into something I am grateful for every day. From selling a few rugs, I now offer ever expanding lines including children's apparel and accessories, a whole line of crochet rugs with new and upcycled fabrics, embroidery art, and blankets. I have chosen to keep my shop small and handmade entirely by me, but I never know what the future will bring.

Balancing a business and a household with three young children and our newest addition, Leonidas, the Great Dane, is a challenge to say the least, but I cannot imagine my life taking any other path than the one I am on. I truly am one of those lucky people that get to do what they love for a living. I never know what each morning will bring, but I am always up for anything, I put much thought and care into every single item I make, and I value each relationship created through this business. I have been touched by so many of my clients, still get overly excited with each new idea that pops in my head, and am absolutely ecstatic to share my world, and that of King Soleil with you.

Shipping
Shipping prices include shipping and handling and domestic tracking. If you would like insurance added to your package please let me know prior to shipping. I use the US Postal Service.

Shipping times vary; even with the estimates given via the USPS. Therefore I ship domestic orders at least 2 weeks before an event date and a month prior to an international event date. I am not responsible for packages arriving after event dates when kept to this schedule. If my shipping estimate infringes on the 2 week domestic or month international deadline I will upgrade your shipping free of charge.

Rush shipping is always available and I will quote you a price based on where you are in the world. I will also recommend rush shipping if an event date pushes my time frames.

I will mark all international packages as merchandise with the correct value listed. You are responsible for any fees in your country.

I ship worldwide! If you are ordering more than one item, or a crochet rug, contact me with your delivery information (including city and country) for a shipping quote.

I am not responsible for any lost, undeliverable, or damaged products via the shipping process. I do track domestic orders. I will proceed on a case by case basis if such issues occur. You are responsible for giving me your correct, current address at the time of the order. Packages will be sent to the address given at the time of the order. I am not responsible for changed addresses, moving addresses, or old addresses given at the time of the order. Please make sure the address given at the time of the order is current and will be current given my time frames as to when your product will be sent.

Additional policies and FAQs
A note on custom orders:

Custom items are made to order and are non-returnable and non-refundable. Please be sure to spell names for name embroidery hoops correctly in the notes to seller during the order.

A note on time frames:

Time frames vary based on the time of year and my availability. I can only take a limited amount of special occasion dress orders per month and can book 4-6 months ahead of time.

I will give an estimated ship date, but this is truly an estimation and will only ship by a certain date if a specific date is given at the time of the order, and/or agreed to prior to the order being placed. I always do my absolute best to get orders out as soon as I can, while keeping handmade quality and care in the forefront. I have chosen to keep King Soleil small and completely handmade by me, but that does elongate turn over times.

A note on deposits:

I offer deposits on special occasion dresses for events roughly 5 months or more ahead of time. There is a first deposit of 30% of the cost of the dress and then the other 70% plus shipping will be paid by an agreed upon date. Keep in mind I do not order your materials or begin production on the dress until it is paid in full, but a deposit locks in the price and style of the dress and guarantees production time.

A note on discounts, giveaways, samples, and wholesale:

I do offer small discounts on special occasion dresses on a case by case basis that vary on size and number of dresses (usually 4 or more in one order). This also depends on my availability as well. If you have any questions or would like more information about discounts for a large order do not hesitate to ask.

I am not currently able to participate in any website, blog, or event giveaways. However, I love hearing from you and if I like your site or event I am happy to promote it on my sites.

I do offer samples of fabrics that I currently have in stock for special occasion dresses. Contact me for a sample listing (ranges from $5-$8 depending on style of dress and with free shipping).

If you are interested in a ordering a bulk wholesale order please contact me with your shop/company information (phone, website, address), what products you are interested in and how many of each product you would like. I am not offering the special occasion dresses through wholesale orders at this time as they can only be purchased through the King Soleil Etsy shop. I love working with businesses big and small and always am thrilled to meet new people!
