Announcement   Welcome to our Jewelry Tutorials, Nautical Knotted Jewelry and One-of-a-Kind Jewelry shop in Etsy.

You may know us as KingfisherDesigns on Etsy. We have restructured our business because our work is evolving. We opened KingfisherArtJewelry just for our jewelry tutorials and our own Jewelry Collections. This is a very exciting step for us and we hope you will enjoy the new tutorials, new techniques we are using and teaching and our Jewelry Collections.

The tutorials will always be available in the KingfisherArtJewelry shop. Our newest designs are always found on our website first, https://kingfisherdesignsmetals.com/.

Those on our mailing list are always the first to know about special sales and our newest designs. Those events are held on our website. We would love for you to join our email list at https://kingfisherdesignsmetals.com/pages/key-club

We plan to expand the tutorials to over 30 tutorials (which are already in the pipeline). These instant download tutorials are presented in the form of an Ebook with a companion Video. You are invited to use any of the tutorials to make jewelry for yourself or to sell. The tutorials will be accompanied by a Bonus Pack of information and techniques.

We have taught week-long workshops, short workshops and ongoing classes. Using the information we developed from teaching students in a classroom setting we have learned how to present information so it is well-understood and can be used. If you have any questions or need more explanation about any of our tutorials, please contact us at kingfisherdesigns [!at] gmail.com.

Each piece of jewelry is either one of a kind or part of a limited edition collection. The jewelry will be on the Etsy shop only until Christmas.

"We" are Don & Louise Coulson, the design team behind Kingfisher Designs. Our tiny studio is attached to our tiny house by the river. We make everything we sell by hand. Every piece in the shop carries fingerprints from both of us. We invite you to enjoy our Etsy shop and visit our other online locations.

Updates

We are thinking about putting our bowline jewelry back in the Etsy shop along with the tutorials, so I started with this piece.
While I work on the “6 for 6” bracelet tutorial I am trying to decide which one will be next. Maybe the “Outrageous Ring”
This is just one of the variations available on our basket tutorial. This one is about .75” across. What cute earrings they would make.

About

A Passion for Making Jewelry and Teaching Through Tutorials

Don and I (Louise) collaborate on almost everything we make or write. We spend hours "playing" in our shop and coming up with new and different things. To say we enjoy our work is an understatement.

People have asked us "Why knots? Why do you tie the knots in precious metal?" We lived on our boat for 12 years so the knots mean a lot to us and bring back that part of life we enjoyed so much.

We have been making jewelry, writing tutorials and teaching jewelry classes since 2003. We have taught jewelry making for various shops and organizations. We have also taught week-long workshops at William Holland School of Lapidary Arts and at Wildacres in the Blueridge Mountains.

Both of us love to teach - just to see a student learn then adapt what they have learned to their own designs - what a wonderful thing! We are also lucky enough to keep in touch with students from years ago.

Our work in galleries from Virginia to Louisiana. We do juried art / craft shows in the mid south region. We have won a number of awards, been published in national magazines and were featured along with 39 other craftsmen in I am a Craftsman, 40 at 40 for the 40th anniversary of the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi. We are members of the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi and Tennessee Craft and the Columbus Arts Council.

Our work has evolved from wire jewelry to include a wide variety of ancient and contemporary techniques in copper and silver and more recently into home decor and pieces for dining and serving. You can see that work in our other Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/KingfisherDesigns

We have always done things few other people have - like moving 43 times in 47 years, living on a boat, living in an RV and raising the majority of our own food. So our journey from careers in engineering and teaching into the world of metal was actually almost expected.

We live in a tiny house on an island in the Tenn Tom Waterway in Mississippi with water on one side and woods on the other. Thank goodness for our semi-isolation because we can be pretty noisy when the hammers ring.

We collaborate constantly applying the strengths of the "right brain" (Louise) and the "left brain" (Don) to make the work. Almost every piece we produce has finger prints from both of us.

We are intensely experimental but we use the metal smithing techinques that have been used for centuries to create work that is functional, durable and unusual. One of the most frequently heard statements in our show booth or gallery appearances is "I've never seen anything like that before". ... And that is what we want to hear.

But hand crafted and unusual are not enough. That magic combination of C's - Creativity, Craftsmanship and Choice of materials is always present in every piece of our distinctively different work.

The reason we work is a passion for what metal can do. We just simply can't "not" make things. Each new technique or tool opens new horizons of possibility and design. Sometimes it seems like what one of us doesn't dream up, the other one does. It is not unusual for us to be out in the shop in our pajamas in the middle of the night because we wanted to explore a new design.

Our own life choices, the river, woods and animals around us influence our shapes, textures and colors. It is not simply the existence of these things - but more the changes we see due to season and aging. We subscribe to the beauty in imperfection concept of Wabi Sabi especially in creating our best One-of-a-Kind pieces.

Some pieces explode spontaneously from the hammer or torch while others are developed through modeling, sketching or experimentation. Each piece is a journey and we invite you along for the adventure!

Shop members

  • Louise Coulson

    Owner, Head Pyromaniac, Internet Marketing

Louise definitely has both feet firmly planted in mid-air. She finds the metal a challenging medium. She designs "outside the box" with a fanciful constant questioning of the materials and their possibilities both accidental and by design.

  • Don Coulson

    Lead Engineer, Master Craftsman, Photographer

A true "left brain" and a former engineer, Don brings attention to detail and precision in craftsmanship to everything he does. His well-thought-out pieces reflect authenticity influenced by his own exciting “twist”, and Old World craftsmanship.

  • Deuce (The Copper Cat) Coulson

Studio Supervisor, Quality Control, Stress Relief Officer

Deuce keeps us all in line. He takes care of any moving objects - particularly small pieces that fall to the floor. He bats them under the table never to be seen again. He has an uncanny way of falling asleep exactly where you want to work.

  • Our Studio

    Our Work Space

Our main studio is only about 8' x 11'. We 2 have outdoor work areas for casting, polishing and grinding as well as a small outdoor studio for extra room for Don's wood working tools.

  • Nautical Jewelry Collection

Tradition And Elegance, Authentically Hand Tied

Each piece in our Nautical Jewelry Collection is hand-tied. We use 14k solid yellow gold for traditional whipping to make these pieces life-time treasures to be passed on to the next generation.

  • Elements Collection

    Copper Jewelry

Our Elements Collection features copper jewelry with color developed through patination techniques including fumes, flames and fluids. Each piece is then coated to preserve the finish. Lots of style and artistry at a reasonable price.

Taking care of your jewelry - Part 2

Your jewelry is stone, metal or glass. The pieces will scratch each other if you just pile them in your jewelry box. If you will wrap them individually or put them in an organizer, they will stay beautiful for many many years.

What is the difference between solid gold and gold filled or rolled gold

Solid gold is gold all the way through. It is suitable for bracelets, rings and other pieces that get hard wear. Gold filled or rolled gold is a tube of solid 14k gold that is filled with another metal. The tube is 100 times as thick as gold plate and it is wonderfully suited for earrings and pendants. If you have gold earwires nothing is touching your skin except 14k gold, so if you can wear solid gold ear wires you can wear gold filled earwires. We do not recommend gold filled for pieces that take a lot of punishment like rings and bracelets.
