About

KiniArt™ - Contemporary PUP Artist, Kim Niles

It was over ten years ago that an illness in the family forced my attention away from experimenting with larger "serious" paintings on canvas and led me to focus instead on a smaller scale activity I had mindlessly done all my life... doodling.

A working Artist since the late 1990s, I sold my 2D and 3D paintings online, but in early 2004, thanks to a sudden loss of studio space & space for supplies, I started to doodle silly little dog breed caricatures on tiny scraps of paper with India ink pens and color pencils - and KiniArt was born.

It was those early dog breed doodles that caught the attention of a children's book Publisher and I Illustrated my first children's book, (Westie The Dog) in 2005. I decided to write the story for my next book (Muggles' New Home), about a westie terrier puppy searching for his forever home, and that was published in 2010. I'm currently working on my next book project, as well as fabric designs, apparel , home decor, & other product projects. I have a large portfolio of work under the KiniArt label and I am always seeking new KiniArt Licensees.

Kawaii is an adjective in Japanese meaning " pretty; cute; lovely; charming; dear; darling; pet" ... KiniArt™ is my own unique animal-obsessed interpretation of Kawaii & the world around me. I was lucky enough to grow up completely surrounded by a hysterically sarcastic family with a wickedly wacky sense of humor. That humor is sometimes seen in my art titles, which are often inspiration for the artworks themselves.

Music is as valuable a tool in the studio as my art supplies. It keeps the hyper-critical side of my brain from interfering with the whimsy and humor. Sometimes a peanut butter and pickle sandwich is also highly valued in the studio - a doorway of sorts to childhood silliness.

Life is good. I'm fortunate enough to live on Whidbey Island in WA state and I love my job, whether I'm drawing my silly version of an adorable dog breed, designing fabric, apparel, or gift items, or shipping a newly purchased KiniArt puppy to it's new home.

My art is recognized worldwide. It's lighthearted and happy - all the best parts of me, my childhood and my family. My biggest thrill as an Artist is knowing that through my art, my 5-year-old animal-loving inner child has connected with yours.
