Dog Breaks Leg - Life begins Again

I grew up on the east coast of Maryland on the shores of the St. Clements Bay, collecting shiny shells, sharks teeth, and sea glass and stringing them into collars for my first of many faithful and slightly demented dogs, Misty, a nearsighted perpetually flatulent Kerry Blue Terrier, who followed me everywhere.

As a kid, I played in the surf, I rode horses, I grew up. I went to art school, made jewelry in college, selling mostly at flea markets and making special gifts for friends, and had a few "adult jobs". My overwhelming passion and understanding for horses has driven my career choices for most of my life. I've been a professional horse trainer for over 20 years, competing, traveling, coaching, living and breathing horses.

In 2009, in a mid life crisis fueled transitional cliff leap, I moved from the east coast to Pendleton Oregon. It's a stark and beautiful world of high desert and mountains, intense colors and double rainbows. I rode some horses for people, I hiked in the mountains with my dogs, I went back to school and tried to get my head together. Then in an instant things changed.

In a ridiculously comical dog walking disaster in early 2010, my 70 pound Boxer, Zsa Zsa, crashed into the side of my knee at about 100 mph and shattered my leg in more than 20 pieces and changed my life. I spent 4 months on my friends couch, whacked out on pain medication and not allowed to bear any weight on my leg. It was winter and I sat in front of the enormous picture window in the living room, overlooking the foothills of the Blue Mountains.

Crippled, frustrated , useless and generally pissed off, I watched the world go by and to be honest, I did a fair amount of sulking- wondering whether I would ever be able to go back to an active lifestyle. But after a while as I watched the ever changing sky and blazing orange sunsets, the purple clouds and the snow storms swirling across the mountains, the wind and the rain- the wonder and awesome power of the natural world outside my window overcame my petulance and I began to be inspired to create shiny beautiful things again.

I am so grateful that my leg healed fine and I have been able to continue to ride and hike in the mountains. I still love to ride and train horses, I still teach riding lessons and help horses with their people problems. My two mares Sadie and Pearl make my heart smile everyday with their antics and affection. I still love my dogs, even my goofy Boxer Zsa Zsa, in fact she is my model for several designs for dogs.

I find myself in a very different place spiritually and emotionally these days, less driven by competitive success and more compelled to give back. Sharing my life with my best friend Tom, who nursed me back to health and his wonderful daughter. Currently, I'm working with my step daughter Clare to design a collection to benefit the local animal shelter, where we volunteer. These pieces will be designated specially in the Benefit Pieces section of my Etsy Shop.

I'm inspired by my colorful world, by good friends who touch my heart, by the children, dogs, and horses that gallop wildly through it. Loving the shiny, sparkly, furry, feathery, sometimes muddy and dusty chaos that is my life.

I hope you enjoy browsing the pieces I've created and that some of them touch and resonate with you as well.

Life is beautiful! Enjoy the sparkle!

I've always been fascinated with shiny things. Easy to hypnotize...

  • Tom

    Designer, Support Engineer

Tom is my partner in crime. He puts up with a dirty house, unruly dogs and my bouts of manic creativity, encouraging me and providing me hot yummy food and a well timed glass of wine! He also designs and creates the BEST Halloween costumes for Clare

  • Clare

    Maker, Designer, Comic Relief

Clare has an eye for color, sparkle and fun and helps design some especially whimsical pieces. She's always ready for a new project, a hoola hoop contest or a race around the house.

  • Sadie

    Red Haired Mare

Sadie reminds that me beauty and joy can be found in the simplest of things: a patch of sweet green clover or a satisfying scratch on the rump.

  • Pearl

Pearl grew up running mostly wild in the hills. She was given to me by a man who couldn't often catch her. She is a true heart. She is beauty, strength, grace and wonder. She chose to come and follow me and that is an amazing gift.

    Quality Control

Louise judges us all and finds us sorely lacking on a regular basis.

  • Zsa Zsa

Zsa Zsa inspired me to start making jewelry again after a long hiatus from my art. How did she do this you ask? She ran into my knee running 100 mph and shattered my leg so that I had to spend 4 months unable to walk... nothing to do but create!

  • Beeboo

    Perimeter Patrol

Bee Boo is my 11 year old Blue Heeler. He keeps track of pretty much everything around here and makes sure that we're all on task.
