Graduate Student Found Her Creative Outlet

I've always been a creative person, but I'd never considered myself crafty. Working for a Hallmark Store part time allowed me to design wedding invitations and gift baskets for customers on a regular basis. It wasn't until I started attending Business School that I realized how important my second job had been as a creative outlet. I started to feel isolated and anxious about my decision to return to school.

One of my friends was clever enough to gift me with a set of knitting needles and a skein of yarn. Her real gift to me, though, was the lessons in learning to knit. Knitting had the benefit of easing the stress of school and a full time job while also being productive. With her, I pursued sewing classes and knitting workshops as a way to stay social. It gave me the confidence to try new artistic things.

In the Summer of 2014, my friend came across some painted glasses that she just adored. We were both too strapped for cash with paying for graduate school to even think about paying the boutique price for them. I had a mission, though, and set out to recreate them to the best of my ability for her 35th birthday present. I was successful and my friend was sure I'd gone back and paid the inflated prices. When I told her that I'd made them myself she immediately suggested I create my own designs and sell them.

It was my boyfriend who really got me started with the Etsy shop, though. He loved every single glass I would paint for fun and would tell all of our friends that they should commission me to paint a set for them. I started with the Wine Glasses, but he also encouraged me to add some of the Hand-knit accessories I'd been stashing away.

With Graduation imminent my Etsy shop will go directly to paying down the student loans that are looming behind it. Not only has crafting provided a creative outlet that helped me keep my sanity through the pressures of school, but it will also provide a means to tackle those daunting payments.
