shaking up DC dress at a time

I'm a California girl who found herself three thousand miles away from home in the strangest place on earth: Washington, DC.

My day job was covering Capitol Hill for public radio. I discovered that there are very strict, yet unspoken rules, about everything in Congress - including the dress code. All of my lovely shoes - the lime green mules, the pink cork sandals, the blue plastic pumps - had to go. Capitol Hill takes itself very seriously and I had to come up with a wardrobe to match.

Luckily, my mother had taught me to sew. I had taken pattern making classes at Trade Tech. And my late girlfriend Mary O spent many Friday nights, helping me first with my wedding dress, then with a hundred and one other couture projects. It didn't take long to turn California Kitty into Kitty of Capitol Hill.

Soon, my journalistic colleagues and congressional staffers started asking where I found my tweedy dresses and funky Channel-like jackets. When they discovered that I'd made them, they asked when I would start making clothes for them, too.

In January, I left public radio behind to turn to my passion for fashion.

My mission: to create professional clothing for the woman who appears on C-Span...or at that all-important staff meeting. I create clothing that is comfortable and gives a girl confidence. It's serious clothing with a subtle sense of humor.

And because a Capitol Hill gal plays just as hard as she works, I've also created a weekend wardrobe and items appropriate for casual Fridays - or, as they say on Capitol Hill, when members are out of town, having a district work week.

Thank you for stopping by Kitty of Capitol Hill. I started making my own DC work wardrobe when I couldn't find classy, comfortable, affordable clothing to wear. My tweed dresses and upcycled knits prompted constant requests from colleagues to make one for them. Now, I'm making them for you, too.
