About

Extreme Knitting is taking over my studio

I started my shop with a range of knitting patterns for cupcakes in DK yarns. I couldn't find a cupcake pattern which gave a great result and was easy to construct with minimal seaming. So I designed my own. Then I carried on, designing cloths, bags, Christmas decorations, and toys - always with the ease of the knitter in mind.

Recently the phenomenon known as Extreme Knitting has been spotted around the web and I was fascinated by the idea of knitting on a much larger scale. But as this is still quite a niche area of the craft, the tools for the job are not easily available. I asked my uncle to make me some giant circular needles and double pins, which he was happy to do. I made a cable blanket in soft acrylic which has loads of impact. Then I came across some beautiful undyed giant wool at a knitting show. Semi-felted, creamy coloured, and sculptural, I was inspired. I began experimenting with baskets and containers. I loved that it was an all-natural, 100% wool fibre - and so did my cats. The minute I put my work down, a cat would sit on it. So why on earth don't I make a cat basket, I thought.

This is what I did, and it took many, many hours of trial and error, prototypes, and pattern re-writes. I discovered that it was no good working from a pattern designed in DK, because in extreme knitting everything is scaled up and magnified. Any unevenness is visible and could potentially spoil the look of the finished item. So a lot of problem-solving was needed in the designs. On the plus side, in extreme knitting the simplest stitch of all is transformed into a work of art. The humble garter stitch, which I admit I have rather dismissed as a 'beginner's stitch', becomes a thing of great beauty.

Throughout this process I am really getting to know my medium and it feels very special to be working at the extreme end of knitting, using the tools made by my uncle. It feels great to be continuing the family handcrafting tradition.

I am a textile designer in knitting and I love cats. Sooner or later the two would come together and I knitted my cat. Here's me and Herbie and his new friend. I also design knitted cakes and extreme knitting cat baskets.
