„What beautiful toys are these!“ I hear or read very often, and I both like it and feel sorry about it.
Crocheting is usually associated with grandmas, caps for kids, or teddy bears for babies. It is an activity that is old-fashioned and maybe too common. It is an activity any mother on maternity leave can handle. If she cannot, her mother definitely can.
However, this is not entirely correct. It does not apply to beautiful lace blankets, or luxury crochet wedding dresses. Such things require hours, days, and sometimes even weeks or months worth of time. They require the talent, dexterity, and patience of the people who make them. The same applies for my Buttonies. It is not enough to sit down to watch a movie in the evening for a new Buttonie to hatch from a ball of yarn. There is much more.
There are hours of thinking, piles of papers with designs, dozens of minutes of picking and ordering the right materials. And there are long days of waiting for the package with supplies to arrive. After that, my closet is full of colorful balls of high quality, mostly natural yarn, a small case with buttons, a box of threads, crocheting hooks, needles, and more necessary tools needed for the actual production.

When I have all I need, the only things remaining is to pick the right color combination and find some free time so I can start. I cannot wait!
I use my own special crocheting style. It takes double amount of material and it takes two times longer than the classic style, but it is worth it. The benefits are the original look, increased quality and firmness.
The actual crocheting usually takes a few days. Some parts are very small and difficult to create. I often need to re-calculate everything and re-do the parts to get them in a perfect shape. Some parts need a wire, and I need to stuff them continuously. I put glass pebbles in some parts for a better stability. I use joints to make a rotating head. Ears, feet, and some other smaller decorations are made by hand sewing pieces of fabric, fur, or felt. Reindeer antlers are also made by hand.
I pay special attention to finishing and overcasting to make sure the yarn does not get loose.
When the basic shape is finished, I need to pick the right eyes. It is not as easy as it sounds though. Eyes made of buttons are the important recognizable sign of Buttonies. I select them very carefully. Sometimes, I find them right away, sometimes it takes longer, but there surely is a pair for everyone.

What's next? Making a scarf. An elegant scarf is necessary, because you know, winter is coming :) I make scarves from four strings to form a braid. Then I carefully put it around the neck... breathe in ... and here he is. A new Buttonie is born! What a cutie you are! But what is your name, honey? I'll figure something out. It will be beautiful. As beautiful as you. Sometimes I start crocheting with the name already in mind. Sometimes it comes during the process, and sometimes it actually takes a while. But it has not happened yet to have one without a name :)
Now it is the time to make a photo book. I clean my special spot, pick a suitable background, set the lights... say cheese! Once again! The Buttonie is posing in front of the camera, giving cute looks, and there are even moments when he is a little bit shy. Finished.

I turn off the lights and put the little creature on the shelf with all the others. He will rest there because there surely is a long journey to a new home awaiting him. I make myself a coffee and start selecting the best shots for a presentation. I browse through the photos, pick some, sip from the cup, click, delete, click... I am very impatient. Just a moment. Just couple more tweaks in a photo editor, upload to our e-shop and... Yay! I share my joy from the well job well done with the world.
Do you like it or not? I do, I would not show him to you otherwise :)

See, they are not just toys. They are Buttonies. Original collectible items. Each one is different and every one is made to bring joy.
