GENUINE TREASURES - GOLDSMITH'S STORY
It´s midnight and there's Led Zeppelin pulsing through a cracked window of a goldsmith's workshop. Baby baby baby... A guy is sitting on his stool holding a small tool with a teeny tiny nob at the end of it. The tool is attached to a micro motor which Vesa (it's him!) is operating in order to smooth over the surface of a ring to remove a slight defect that would be undetectable to your eyes or mine. The big chunky fingers are working quickly and with the highest precision. In addition to the diamonds there will be a beautiful yellowish green beryl in the ring. The customer wanted prongs around the jewel, thin as string, but Vesa hasn't agreed to that, will and cannot agree: if the prongs are too delicate the ring will not be of sufficient quality, it will be too weak and will not last. Making things that will not last is beyond comprehension to Vesa. The world is already filled with disposable items, things that quickly lose their value and worth and are easily cast away. - Think of all the gold in the world: everything that people need has actually already been mined. - Couldn't you recycle what you don't need, while holding on only to the truly precious ones? That's what Vesa wants to create, genuine treasures. Unique and sustainable jewelry. Engagement rings and wedding bands that charm you even after fifty years.
Vesa remembers his childhood treasure, a ring made of airplane aluminium crafted by his grandfather during the years of war while on the battlefront. He used to keep it in a small metal box in the desk drawer together with the small parts of chains he collected here and there: in ditches, from attics, in the basements. Anywhere a small boy would find precious items. He has saved them all, as well as crayons from his childhood, all stickers, every little token and nick-nack. Everything is preserved and stored away carefully and meticulously.
The goldsmith inspects the jewels in the ring to make sure they are aligned. The making of the ring is proceeding well. He's added few angular details to the design of the ring which bring an exquisite flavor to it. The final result is turning out to be exactly as Vesa needs it to be - he wants the customer to be completely happy with the piece of jewelry they ordered and he also wants to be fully satisfied with it himself. Then, and only then, it's perfect.
