About

Video summary: The technological process of making our woven authentic products. Using unique technique of work, master of weaving create two completely identical faces of the fabric that can be alternated in use.

Magical world of our authentic traditional handwoven wall hanging, kilims and decorations.

We are "Kotlenski Decoration" and we are delighted to immerse you in the magical world of our authentic, highly artistic and emblematic Bulgarian hand-woven artwork - wall hangings, pillows, kilims and kilim runners of 100% Bulgarian wool. Our town of Kotel, Bulgaria, is famous for its centuries-old tradition in the manufacture of hand-woven kilims, with their origins deep in the 18th century.

Captivated by the magic of this ancient and mysterious craft, we also create with great passion another handmade boutique product in traditional and modern style – canvas paintings painted with colored ink.

All our products carry the cultural spirit of ancient Bulgaria and at the same time satisfy the modern aesthetic taste, which makes them a very good gift for yourself or your loved ones.

They harmoniously complement and warm the home, creating the necessary connection between the interior and the human.

THE WEAVING IN KOTEL

Using unique technique of work, masters of weaving create two completely identical faces of the fabric that can be alternated in use. With proper maintenance and storage these kilims can be used by several generations.
In addition to their artistic value, they excel in many world collections with their valuable features, qualities and durability.

As Kotel’s women like to say about the two faces of the kilims while weaving them: “One is for the first 100 years and the other one for the next 100.

Modern geometricised architecture also requires decorative elements of the interior to have a simplified geometric decoration. And that are exactly the old Kotel kilims and decorations.

The proper thickness of the natural fiber has good thermal insulation and gives comfort in walking. Due to the natural origin of the materials, kilims are more resistent to pollution and easily cleaned.

Their thickness is about 5 mm and the structure of the woolen threads is dense, which prevents them from crimping when walking over them. When laid, the fabric lays well on the floor and remains smooth.

The wool yarn that builds the structure of our kilims is precisely dyed with high quality products from well established firms.

Materials

Weft of 100% Bulgarian natural wool, warp of 100% cotton;

Weaving Technique

Smooth double-faced, having two completely identical face sides of the fabric that can be use alternatively.

Motifs

The motifs used in Kotel kilims and decorations are mostly geometric and less nature-resembling. The preference for geometric motifs is not so much due to aesthetic attitude, but is determined primarily by the weaving technique itself.

Colors

The colors applied are typical of the Kotel kilim making and their combination is done precisely and balanced. The wool yarn is dyed with high-quality products from well-established companies and keeps its color durable when properly maintained.

TECHNOLOGY OF WEAVING

The technological process of making a Kotel kilim or kilim runner requires a lot of attention and experience to accomplish in the required quality.

Kotel kilims and kilim runners are weaved on a vertical loom. It consists of two vertical beams, the top and bottom ones having openings for inserting the warp-beams. Tensioning between the warp-beams is achieved by inserting cotters into the slit of the beams under the upper warp-beam or by a screw.

After stabilizing the loom, begins the laying of the cotton warp. It is done by tieing the end of the warp, wrapped in a ball, to one of the warp-beams. The warp is then rolled over the top and bottom warp-beam until a mesh of the desired width is obtained. After putting the warp in place, it is evenly distributed and stretched. One or two laths are placed across the warp, with the warp passing once above the lath and then underneath it. Thus the warp is divided into pairs, which is particularly necessary for the weaving itself.

Weaving, that is the interlacing the warp with the weft in Kotel kilims, is done in a way different than the weaving of smooth kilims in other places.

Weaving is based on the fact that the warp is divided in pairs by a lath with some threads passing under the lath, and others over it. To get the kilim stitch we need to run the fringe once between the threads that pass over the lath and the back threads, then gather the back threads by hand, pull them hard forward to make them front threads and then return and weave the weft behind them. This action in the Kotel technique is done Exactly as follows: a certain number of threads of the warp passeding over the lath, thus forming the permanent cleft, are gathered with one hand and pulled strongly forward.

Two ways of weaving are known in Kotel kilim making: that of the single threads and of the pairs of threads. When working by the single thread technique, after a few through-passings of the weft, it recedes to the left or the right with a single thread and in the second manner it does with a pair of threads.

The oldest, known and applied in the kilims weaving in the Kotel region is the "cut" technique. It features the oldest Kotel kilim rugs and kilims. The weft of the Kotel kilims do not pass through the entire width of the fabric, but is used to make individual motifs.

The main element of the motifs is the rectangle. The first motif derivative of the rectangle is the rhomboid. The triangle is obtained by the simultaneous skipping of threads from the warp to the left and to the right. Conversely, a trapezoid is obtained by the concatenation of the main threads on the left and right. These are the basic geometric shapes, from which the main motifs in the Kotel kilims are derived.
