Sculptural paintings are part painting and collage, part assemblage and sculptural relief. Inspired by my half country girl/half city girl sensibility, these hybrid artworks are dreamscapes where the urban and pastoral harmoniously collide. Industrial hues are combined with organic shapes and colors, resulting in simple abstract structures that reflect my childhood memories growing up in the green mountains of Vermont and my current life as a city-dweller in Chicago.

ABOUT THE TECHNIQUE:
It starts with a 22” x 30” piece of thick 300 lb watercolor paper that is ripped in half or thirds. Thick gesso surfaces are built up, stripped down and manipulated with acrylic paint and other color mediums to create various relief effects and patterns. I keep the organic lines created from the tears with some, while others are cut to create certain shapes.
The result is a variety of “trompe l’oeil” surfaces that are often mistaken at first glance to be plastic, metal, wood, ceramic or rubber.
The scraps from this process are recycled for future works. The goal is to utilize as much of the original paper as possible, creating multiple artworks from a single sheet.
