I have an affinity for birds, particularly the BIMBY or Birds-In-My-Back-Yard. Creating ART from these little birds that frequent the many fountains and feeders in my Victorian garden on the Westside of Santa Cruz, CA. couldn’t be more rewarding. I live there with my family, 4 dogs and a cat named Woody.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also have great memories from Yosemite National Park and have a BATIK series of the most famous of the Yosemite landmarks: El Capitan, Half Dome, Vernal Falls, Yosemite Falls, Valley View and Tuolumne High Country. These are particular favorites of mine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have my bachelor’s degree in ART with emphasis in Textile Design with most of my training in BATIK. (BATIK is a ancient method of creating fabric that involves applying hot wax and dyes or inks repeatedly to a piece of fabric, alternating the wax and dyes to achieve unique patterns and designs.) To create a new piece, I like to start with a photograph which inspires a drawing that might become a atercolor and, if the design is right, I will create the BATIK. I have to be very elective as to which designs become BATIKS. Each piece can take weeks/ months to create, and knowing what works and what doesn’t is pretty important.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The best designs are put onto the computer, often altered a bit, combining and repositioning. They become illustrations that are turned into greeting cards and silk prints. These are the heart of my business here on Etsy. My BATIK originals and prints can be viewed on my website, LadyWhoLovesBirds.com. I also open my studio, which is in the ground level basement of my home, for our county wide Open Studios during the month of October and for the holidays.
My love of birds started with me simply being more observant of the visitors coming to my home many years ago. My very first such observation was an Audubon warbler that came back year after year. He was extremely territorial and would chase away other little birds, one in particular (turned out to be a Townsend warbler) that also liked our yard. I began realizing that there were many birds that visited. I felt blessed and wanted to know about them. I picked up a beginner’s birding book and started identifying my BIMBY. They now form the basis of much of my art business, LadyWhoLovesBirds: bushtits, chestnut-backed chickadees, scrub jays, mourning doves, hermit thrushes, rubycrowned kinglets, juncos, pygmy and red-breasted nuthatches, cedar waxwings, Audubon warblers, and of course, CROWS!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So do come in and browse. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you for visiting my shop! And I can't forget to ask...."Who are Your BIMBY?"

5 out of 5 starsStunning beauty! Prettier than the photo and very carefully wrapped and presented. Met my expectations and more. The batik work is truly a work of art. Also, the artist sent little gifts, a delightful surprise! I'll keep an eye on this shop as I am sure to like and buy more of her pieces!

About LadyWhoLovesBirds
LadyWhoLovesBirds, a Shop for Those Who Love Birds and Dogs and Cats and Wildlife....
I think of myself as a designer foremost. I love to work on the computer-I work in Photoshop-and create different designs from my original watercolors. My little birds, the BIMBY (Birds-In-My-Back-Yard), form the heart of my designs. I manipulate them and configure them into ever changing designs. I love the holidays and use my little birds to express this. Each holiday has special meaning for me and sharing this and creating designs that others enjoy really makes my day.
I started my Etsy shop several years ago. I was a practicing artist at the time and was looking for an online venue to show my work. Although I had created a website, I found myself drawn to the Etsy community and enjoyed communicating with like-minded artists.
At this point in time, I am completely devoted to my Etsy shop and expanding it. I love the interactions I have with my customers and particularly enjoy doing custom work. Using templates that I have created from personal photographs as well as found designs (generally in the public domain), I use photos that customers send to me and create Custom Greeting Cards or digital files that they can turn into whatever they would like. This is a very fun part of my business. I truly love all animals and pets are right at the top!

Woody is a nut. He was given to us by a friend whose cat hated Woody, so we took him. Turns out, he and Ruby have quite a bond: lots of play.

Chestnut-backed Chickadees
Subject
The chestnut-back chickadees pictured here are mainstays to my garden. They are here year-round and provide hours of pleasure. This particular piece is a traditional BATIK, a resist process of dying fabric using hot wax to create the design.
