Announcement    Naturally dyed alpaca and alpaca/sheep wool blend yarns from our farm and other regional small farms.

Know where your yarn comes from!
The wool used in our yarns is from our farm and from other small regional farms. Much of the world's yarn is milled in China where harsh chemicals are used to clean and soften the fibers. Our wool is minimally processed using a gentle certified organic wash. The result is simply a wool that feels like wool.
We use only natural dyes to color our yarns and choose plants and insects that create lasting color. In season we also grow many dye plants on the farm. Our colors are vibrant but never garish. The natural colors all work very well together.
Knit naturally!

About

Lana Plantae

Lana Plantae (Latin for wool and the plant kingdom) resides on a well established alpaca farm in Maine with a herd of about 50 animals. Our focus, obsession and passion is our very fine alpaca wool colored with natural dyes. We grow many plants on the farm and also responsibly harvest from nature. Our alpacas are white and extremely soft which provides us the palette on which to use natural, non- petroleum based dyes. The color of nature is magnificent and varied. Even batch to batch colors can never be exactly replicated as there are so many variables– genetics, sun, rain, soil conditions, and temperatures. The color possibilities in nature are endless.

On our farm we handle all the duties ourselves. The care and husbandry of the alpacas, the shearing and sorting of fiber. Much of the wool goes on to a local mill for spinning in to yarn but some is retained for washing, carding, and spinning by hand. All the natural dye work is done on the farm and many hand crafted products are made. Where else can you get clothing that from the beginning in its raw state is handled by the same people. There is intimacy, care, and a lot of hard work as well as art in everything we create on the farm.

There is an increased interest in buying local foods and knowing where your food comes from. We want to encourage people to apply that same interest to their apparel. Think about where your clothing comes from and buy from a local fiber farm. Purchase yarn to make your own clothing! To take that a step further we dye our wool only with plants and insects. Chemically produced dyes are derived from coal tar and manufactured in factories that pollute air and water. There are lots of small yarn operations around – take a look at Etsy. Most of them dye their yarn with chemicals and the yarn has been imported, usually from Australia. Even if it is organic it is not local. Buy directly from a wool grower for the best natural fibers.
