Art and fermentation

As a young teenager I was always into trying new things. Art and drawing became one of my favorite hobbies at the age of 12 after entering a drawing to a magazine and being featured. Over the years, as my interests grew and developed I got into painting as well.
I have always been a foodie, and was making wine in my parents basement at 15 yrs old from fruits and food I had harvested, some wild grown. It wasn't until several years later that I discovered kombucha tea, a probiotic fizzy drink known for its funky flavor and many health benefits. I wanted to make my own so I obtained a scoby, the live culture used to make kombucha, and started brewing my own. After discovering that this scoby would produce more babies than I would ever use I knew I needed some more ways to use the extras(besides making scoby jerky :0)! I began to experiment with drying the culture and turning them into jewelry.
The kombucha leather is a wonderful medium to work with because of its beautiful quality when dried and colored. In sunlight it shimmers like ethereal rainbows. Depending on thickness of the scoby, it ranges from paper thin to leathery thick when dried.
I choose my scoby for the jewelry and then place it in food dye or natural pigments for about 1 week. At this point it will have soaked up plenty of color so I then rinse it in non chlorinated water and allow to air dry until most of the moisture is gone. I treat the dried scoby with essential oils to moisturize and preserve them. Now they are ready for the studio!
When I am creating a new design I have a mental image of what I would like this piece of jewelry to convey. I get most of my inspiration from nature. I usually don't know exactly how the end product will look when I begin, inspiration comes as continue to work on it. Each piece is made with love and care and is unique. Even if I make a duplicate, it will vary a little from the the first.
I also offer the kits to brew your own kombucha and hope to sell my kombucha tea here soon. If you purchase a kit from me you will receive a scoby from my own stock of kombucha along with its own starter tea. Pure evaporated cane juice and a custom blend of black and green tea is included. See my listing for remaining items. You will never need to obtain another culture since the scoby produces its own baby culture. Have fun browsing and Have a lovely day!
